Moving Province? Alberta, Ontario or Yukon
Hello All,
We moved to Canada in August and we are now thinking about moving province. We are currently in PEI and my husband has three differernt job offers, in Ear Falls Ontario, Tagish Yukon and High Level Alberta. All are with companies with close ties to the one he works for now, and he loves the company culture at his current place.
He was also offered one in Nunavut but pretty sure we've ruled that one out as we have pet reptiles and being able to get food for them would/could be an issue I think.
Visiting them is difficult due to a toddler and pets (our dog is too heavy to meet domestic airline weight limits would have to drive to each rather than fly) so I was wondering if anyone had any experience of any of these three?
We want to live somewhere colder and "wilder" than PEI (that makes me sound a bit like an idiot), before coming to Canada we lived in the Arctic Circle so we are used to the cold.
I just wondered if anyone had any experiences, either positive or negative of any of these three? How different is it moving province?
We've googled extensively, done plenty of research etc, and if we hated a place we would be happy to move somewhere else, just trying to gather some more information.
Thank you to anyone who got to the end of my ramble!

High Level is pretty much what you'd expect of a larger town up there, things are more expensive than cities (But nowhere near what it would be in Yukon), but it does have just about every amenity you could want, and its only about 3hours to Grande Prairie, which has all the rest of them...this would be especially handy for the reptiles, as there's a large pets at home in GP.
Internet sucks, TV signal sucks, cellphone signal sucks and there is a LOT of snowy and cold days...its very often the coldest place on earth in the winter
The locals talked a lot about trouble with a nearby native reserve and murders/thefts but not sure if that's historically or still happens a lot
It definitely looks like the closest place to civilisation out of the three...i had never heard of ear falls but OMG, i thought i'd been "Up North" in Ontario but that looks like literally the only way out would be on a little plane
You can use your snowmobile on the roads during the winter which is handy
Not sure what house prices are like up there, but I imagine your heating bills would be up there, and there's a lot of places off grid that I noticed, all with tonnes of land
What sort of job has he been offered up there?

Thanks haggis, that's really helpful.
Its a job as a biologist. He has the choice of the three locations if he wants the job. Its really good to know High Level has full amenities, will perhaps be better for our toddler in the long run. Our dog is a guard dog with full bodyguard/protection training so should hopefully ward off most burglars.
We lived off grid in the Arctic before we came to PEI, it was fine really, but having been pampered by life in PEI I would prefer not to be off grid again. Still, the though of having lots of land and no neighbours again does appeal!
Yep, Ear Falls does kind of look like the epitome of back of beyond doesn't it?! Again though, its something we've been used to and have loved. Still, I do like the convenience of PEI, virtually everything within a hours drive is useful.
Husband would love an excuse to have a snowmobile again!
We have had a look at house prices and spoken to realtors, and we were hoping to sell our house in PEI (no mortgage on it) and use the money from that as a deposit for a house in the new location, we also have two income properties here which we were going to keep as extra income, although I haven't looked into how that would work re paying income tax etc.

Almost Canadian, sort of, but he's a Caucasian Ovcharka and IPO doesn't work so well for them. His training is specific to his breed, and he's the best Ovcharka I've ever trained by a long shot and we've had several before.
Unlike most Ovcharkas he has a real flair for tracking and is an amazing family pet - our toddler's best friend! He's been put to the test a few times now and we are so grateful to have him.
Before having Ovcharkas I used to have Dobermans and German Shepherds, and used to do Schuntzhund and IPO with them, I used to love it.

Sorry, meant that his flair for tracking is unusual in the breed, not the family pet aspect, all the Ovcharkas we've had have been brilliant family dogs.

Maremmas protecting sheep flocks in Italy, Ridgebacks protecting against lions in S.Africa and these protecting against bears in Eastern Europe- clearly all three breeds needing a firm hand

Thanks stinkypup, I think he's beautiful, husband mostly just thinks he smells haha! Joking aside, he is one in a million, he's an amazing part of our family.
I have never come across a breed as hard to train as Ovcharkas though, toilet training he learnt flawlessly in less that 24 hours (I was thrilled) "stay" took a looooooong time as he remains convinced that his place is firmly by my side, no matter what. "Stand down" and "enough" also took a long, long time.
Anything that interested him and fitted with his character he learn almost immediately (like his protection, guarding and tracking training) anything else he couldn't be bothered with.
Now he's an adult he loves, trusts and respects us enough to do as we ask and he is very highly trained but the Ovcharka teenage period was not fun! I could go on for ages about how wonderful he is, but I'll stop rambling

Hello and could I just say 'welcome to BE!'
Your posts are like a breath of fresh air.. and I think that breed of dog looks amazing and beautiful!
I know nothing about the areas you are contemplating moving to, so can't offer any advice - hopefully someone will be able to help. My ex sister in law was a nurse practitioner in Nunavit and absolutely loved it there, she has some stories to tell, lol.
Best of luck with your move.. and I hope you stick around on BE!

Oh goodness, thank you Siouxie, and thank you. I've lurked for a long time but only joined just before we came to Canada and have always been a bit daunted about posting in case I ask something stupid or come across as a raving nut case! I would love to stick around.
I'm sure your ex sister in law has some stories, some places really do give them to you if that makes sense. I really miss living in the Arctic, watching the northern lights out of our windows, the different way of life. It seemed a lot simpler, I often feel out of my depth here lol.
We haven't lived in the UK for a long time, except a one month stay before flying out to Canada to make flights and paperwork for the pets and us easier, and we have moved around Europe quite a bit. When we moved to PEI we said it would be the last move, but neither of us are truly happy in PEI, and these job offers sealed the deal.
It sounds stupid (and I feel like an idiot for asking), but how different are other provinces? In terms of people attitudes?

Although this is supposed to be for amusement, I find it quite accurate.

Danny that is hilarious, has been giving us some very entertain googling - the Dawson City toe cocktail tops the list so far!!!
Thank you, it does help a lot. Its difficult as out of all the friends we have made here, none of them have ever been further than Moncton, and they are all horrified at living outside PEI, so its been difficult to get unbiased opinions and experiences

I just Googled Tagish, Yukon and checked their population. 206 people in 2001!! You are screwed if you don't fit in with the locals.
I would definitely recommend a recce before moving there, some small Northern communities have lots of issues, mainly because of alcohol and boredom.
The place in Alberta seems to be (for me) the best of the three. being the paranoid person I am, I would want to know how far away the nearest hospital is, and do they have an RCMP detachment in town.
What a tough decision to make, good luck to you!
I know nunavut is off the list, but have you seen their food prices? OMG.

Danny, yep about Tagish. We have lived in smaller communities, and with a language barrier, but I'm not fond of living in a goldfish bowl and that was one of the things putting me off Tagish - I would worry that if one person took a dislike to you then it might start making things difficult.
Yes, distance of hospitals and RCMP are important, drugs, alcohol, domestic violence too.
The more we've integrated here, the more the drugs problem, and how widespread usage is, becomes apparent. I'm no pearl clutching shrinking violet but the casual drug use and the apathy surrounding it here is pretty shocking.
Food prices in Nunavut - I know!!! My eyes were watering!! We were offered a Northern living allowance, but as our son and I have coeliac disease I can't imagine the allowance would begin to cover costs! I know a lot of people buy in bulk from elsewhere, but still. I wonder if you would ever get used to the prices and see them as normal, and then feel absurdly rich grocery shopping whenever you travelled outside Nunavut.
I do think High Level sounds like our best bet, there look like a good amount of easily accessible opportunities and options for our son too, which is important to us for him as he grows up. As he gets older perhaps he will appreciate not living in a small town, I'm not sure.
A recce although ideal would be difficult, but we figure although we love Canada we're not that happy in this province, so why not try somewhere else?
