Moving Pets to Canada
 

Hello All,
Has anyone else taken pets to Canada with them. We have four moggies we want to take but need to make sure they will be allowed in.

We will give the Rabies shots a week before we go but is there anything else we need to do???

Any help appreciated.

Of course the moggies can go with you. They will also need a fit to fly certificate from your vet. Check out Wiki and you will find loads on info.

I am not sure if its different for cats, but our dog has to have rabies jab at least 30 days before he leaves.

You can either maker enquiries to get them over to Canada yourself by contacting the airline direct or there are lots of pet agents out there who will gladly assist you for a fee. :eek:

hi, just noticed its your 1st posting, welcome to the addictive world of BE !!

if you search the threads at the top right of the page for pet shipping there is alot on there and the blue bar at the top called the wiki there is also a section on shipping pets. as nikkidreaming states the rabies jabs need doing 30days before you intend to go this applies to cats as well, unless you have a pet passport that is, they will need the certificate to say they are fit to fly, this is currently being discussed on another thread.

be prepared for a costly bill for the jabs and the health check, which incidently needs to be done 48hrs before you fly despite what you maybe advised (DEFRA said this is the time scale and not 5 days before). we managed to negotiate a discount with our vet cos we are taking 4 pets...so ask them..you never know.

I think may be you should have shopped around - we bought two dogs with us and the vet bill was very reasonable. As for the health check, get it done as late as possible before you fly.

Yes, we had our dog's rabies vacc last Saturday as she's due to fly on 17th June. We were informed of the 30 day period for the vaccine to work. Also health check within 48 hours of flight...and up to date annuals.

we have registered with our vet for over 12yrs so knew us well i suppose it felt more reassuring in that the dogs have been going to the vet for 4 years (since pups) but we have 2 young tortoises as well. our jabs were £50 per dog, the health checks are £58 each i dont know how this compaires with others and as for the rabies jabs it depends on how long the vaccine lasts as to the cost, ours last for 3 years so worth the expense. i take your point though,

Try LadyHayes, we used them to transport our dog Jack and they are very good. Not sure if they do Cats too. Also I heard that only Air Canada and Air Transat does transport pets to Canada. Not heard of any other airlines. Check on that too.

I am also using Ladyhaye, came out with the most competitive quote by far and I saw from here that they had good recommendations, fingers x they will be ok next month:thumbup:

I've been in discussion with pet travel services (in Dunfermline) and enquiring about transporting pets in the winter. they have asked Air canada and a few others and as long as the cargo hold is heated they will transport pets in winter

Lufthansa fly pets into Toronto so do KLM and British airways, although for 5 huskies I've been quoted an obscene amount though by pet travel services

I'd say it would be worth contacting individual flight companies and asking where they fly to and there restrictions and also what they would charge per animal.

Basically the company I spoke to who said they would do it all for me, have quoted £845 per dog and I still have to get rabies and vet checks done myself over and above that

Think I'm doing it all myself now :blink:

We came with our 18 month old black lab jessie ,we did a lot of research its not as hard as you may think. British Airways is a great source of imfo . The agency that is responsible on the Canadian side is the Canadian food agency. Jessie came on the same flight as us and she was charged out as excess baggage good luck.

We've been given a quote for transport of £800 gonh through an agent with thomas Cook from Manchester. I'm going to try and get a discount as we have so many.

Hi,a good site to check out is pettravel.com 800 pounds per cat is a lot of dosh it only cost us 120 for our lab jessie doing the process ourselves that was 7 years ago may be the rules have changed,but its not as hard as people make out. May be i should look into becoming a pet importer? early retirement here i come.:thumbsup:
