Totally agree, you would struggle on that, rent in Oakville is crazy. Food and utilities, tv etc are all quite expensive too.
Your wife may take a while to find work, I know lots of expats wifes who are struggling to find jobs not to mention Canadian's looking for teaching jobs.
Look at www.mls.ca for rentals in Oakville to give yourself an idea of prices.

Hi, my wife will be on a starting RN salary when we move to Canada and are also hoping to settle in Oakville, so I'm very jealous of you!
A starting RN wage is around the $57'000 mark which leaves $3151 a month after you've paid tax, pension, etc. Good luck!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but a related question, would an LPN salary support a family of 4 anywhere in BC?

Probably better as another thread as a different province but is only a LPN at $44265 a year may be struggle but a lot will depend on expenses etc

Hi I am new to this site so please forgive me if i ask trivial questions.
I am moving over from the U.K in October this year and we are looking to move to Oakville. I will be working on the outskirts (west side) of Brampton and am planning on commuting (as i will only be on 3 shifts a week). My wife and 3 children will be coming with me and they are 6, 5 and a one year old. I am now starting to get a little worried as things are moving quickly. My main issue is can we survive on my salary alone initially in that area? I am not sure on the cost of living etc. I know rental prices are not as cheap as U.K but cannot remember from when we lived in Toronto as to the cost of bills etc We would need at least a 3 bed house within a good school catchment location (any advice on good schools would be greatly appreciated). My wife is a kindergarden teacher and is planning on working once the chilkdren are settled. This will be initially on a casual basis to work around my days off. She has taught on a teaching exchange programme from 2005-2006 in toronto so has some experience of teaching in Canada. I have looked at teachers working info and not sure if she is able to register once over there ( and not sure how long this will take)as i my job is in the skilled class of occuptions?. Also can she work on an open work permit because of my occupation being skilled? (i did this in 2005 when she was working, however i wasnt a nurse then so there wasnt any registration requirement)
Any help would be great

Surviving is about all you will be doing. 75,000 upwards would be more realistic for Oakville. You could live in Milton or Guelph for less, maybe
4 beds Oakville

4 beds Milton

I'm not feeling the love for Oakville though. It's a pleasant enough place in the manner of American suburbs but very much Edward Scissorhands. Why on earth would someone who's not in Brampton or Mississauga pick Oakville as somewhere particularly attractive to move to?

I was on $50k a year when I first moved to Kamloops, BC. I was the sole bread winner with two children aged 11 & 3 back then. Two vehicles to run (cars were bought outright), $150k mortgage, property tax, normal bills, and we survived....just.

Still encouraging gambling Danny ? are you still there ?

If you bought the cars outright then you brought capital with you. Very good, but the OP hasn't suggested he will be doing the same. With negligible savings $55K for a family of 5 is impossible.

Yes I am still working at the same place, had a few different roles and I am now working 4 on 4 off in their Data Centre. I'm loving the shift work, don't think I could go back to 5 on 2 off.
