Moving to canada..help
Right,here goes.
Me and the mrs live in stoke on trent (voted worse place to live in england..sweet). We have a 1 year old daughter and are looking to move away to canada as we dont want her bought up in this over-populated,crime ridden hole of nastyness.
The mrs is a nurse and myself a care worker..or anything for that matter.
We have been searching high and low for weeks now on the best place to go and it seems vancouver is the best bet,but it seems very expensive house price wise.
If any of you good people can advise us on where to go based on our little check list,we will be most greatfull
Close or easy commute to a hospital.
Reasonable distance to airport (traveling back to the uk 4 or 5 times a year)
Lots of big mountains
Lots of water
Plenty of bear ridden forest
Good climate..as in not -70,blue sky would be nice and warmish summer/spring
Im sick of the uk rain so the less of that stuff the better (i hear it rains a lot in vancouver)
Good neighborhood (we hear there are lots of brits out there)
Cheap! Well as cheap as possible anyway as regards to house prices.
We dont want to be stuck bang in the middle of a city...on the edge of some forest or something would be superb.
Okay,so i know we are probably asking for the earth here but you never know.
Many many many thanks in advance
john and vicky

I'll try and help.
I am in Ontario, so can not really comment Vancouver, although according to what I have heard it is expensive.
Do you have jobs yet or PR? I think before looking at certain areas you may need one of these first?

If you are working, in a regular Canadian job, this frequency of travel will be impossible IMHO. Number 1, you won't have the vacation time to do it, and number 2, unless you have substantial funds of your own, you won't earn enough money to afford it. So, if travelling to the 'over-populated,crime ridden hole of nastyness that regularly is important to you, perhaps looking somewhere closer to home might be a wiser decision?

Thats a bit extreme. I spent a weekend in semi-rural Staffordshire/Derbyshire (nr Alton Towers) a couple of weeks ago and it struck me as a perfectly wonderful place to live. Absence of hoodies, sink council estates, etc etc. Perhaps easier and lower cost than moving to Canada?

Your requirement for mountains would tend to point you towards BC or Alberta. I'd suggest you research into what it takes to qualify to be a nurse in Canada and then research where you might find a job. All else will follow from that. Squaring the circle of living in BC with affordable housing and the aforementioned frequent travel to UK might be a challenge though.

If the rain in the UK is too much for you then maybe not Lower BC. Go to www.theweathernetwork.com this will give you an idea of the annual rainfall.
I think the main issue, that one of the above posters was trying to point out, is that if you are working for an employer and not self employed, the chances of you getting enough holiday time for that amount of visits back to Blighty is very slim. Most people only get 2 weeks with a possibility of more the longer you work for the company but there are no guarantees.
Also maybe worth a look at Alberta if you are interested in the Mountains etc.

First look into requirements for the college of RN's because depending on when your wife did her training will depend if she meets requirements. A lot of UK nurses have had to do some form of assessment as the UK training is more specialised where as Canada is general

I'd suggest the following:
1, Figure out how you're going to get into Canada to live
2, Figure out where the work is
3, Figure out what your budget will afford you
4, Pop out there to visit in the summer and winter to make sure this is what you're looking for
5, Think long and hard about the physical distance to your family because 4 or 5 visits per year, if working for somebody, will be nigh on impossible and very very expensive assuming you'd spend more than a few days visiting.
6, Enjoy the journey
7, Realise that the UK isn't so bad after all.

Re: Moving to canada..help
Come to Canada and check it out, talk to some potential employers, look at the surroundings.
I don't know of a place that fits the criteria you have set. You may have to compromise a tad. Unless you are independently wealthy, work may be the determining factor.
Take a peruse through the nursing forum and chat to those folks in there as well.
PS All mountains are big.

I think further examination of the OPs desire to leave the UK would be a good idea. Is this one of those "anywhere but the UK" plans thats destined to end in disappointment?

Re: Moving to canada..help
The desire to leave but visit 5 times a year would seem to imply conflict in his mind, or at the very least, a tenuous grasp of the financial and time (both vacation and travel time) issues associated with such regular travel. Personally, I'd love to be able to go back to the UK five times a year. However, short of winning the Lotto, I don't see it happening.

Still, its fairly easy for family and friends to visit canada. "Relatively easy"
