Moving to Calgary in January - what cold weather gear do we need?
#47

Where do you put the layers you remove? Where do you keep them until you're ready to put them on.
If you're in a car, maybe you get out and you decide it's too cold so you reach in for another layer or you decide it's too warm and you put a layer back.
More likely, you are engaged in some physical activity like snow clearing, say. You get hot so what do you do with the layer you take off, go back into the house to hang it up? That wouldn't be any better than going in and changing one top for another.
Hang the removed garment on your shovel rendering said tool unusable? Perhaps there's a convenient post or hat stand on the drive.

Or you park and then go in the store, How many layers do you carry around, bearing in mind you have shopping too.
Maybe I'm different to everyone else but if I'm hot and in a store, I don't really want to be holding a jacket and a jumper while wandering around, picking things up, maybe trying them for size etc.
Or if it's grocery shopping, there's not a great deal of room in the cart.
A repeat vote for the three-in-one jacket that eases overheating comfort considerably by just unzipping to your shirt or when actually removed acts as one item only as it's zipped together.

'Pit zips. That's what you need. Get overheated, unzip your 'pits to let the cold air circulate.

I have several (ski) jackets that have them... I also have several snowboard pants that unzip on the inner thigh seam to cool off the nether regions... "testicicles" you could say. All very handy for dumping heat when you've been riding in waist deep in the powder all day.

A lot of North face jackets have pit zips. Really good!

What a good idea! I've never seen that before and I'm really impressed. I have put lots of layers on before on a -25 sort of a day, only to go out, get moving and think I'm going to explode from all the heat I've built up...you can get quite scarily hot.

They exist Eddie Bauer BC200 has side zips this season, I almost bought this jacket but went for a slightly longer one instead, even though I no longer work at EB I still love their coats.

I have an older Helly-Hansen 3 in 1 jacket (fleece+shell) and that has pit-zips. Perhaps though the increase in breathable fabrics at an affordable cost has made them less needed?
