Default moving back to usa for work, apply for Canadian citizenship before i go?

Hello all, haven't been here in a long time. Quick recap, married Canadian 2003, landed in 2005, moved back to us with Canadian spouse 2007, came back to Canada 2009, had kid 2010, divorced Canadian this year, and have just got a great job in the us starting next year. I'm thinking of applying for citizenship before i go because i love Canada, if i could have found a job remotely as good i wouldn't be going back to the states. But I'm not sure if i should become a citizen-I'm hoping to move back to Canada eventually but I'm a scientist any job in Canada that i would get in the future would qualify me for skilled worker and/or tn visa. So other than being able to vote (which I'd like) and having to pay some Canadian taxes, what are the pros/cons of an American getting dual Canadian citizenship.

Pros ; You can have 2 x passports and work in both countries as a citizen

Cons ; You are still a US citizen If no Canadian passport and not a PR or citizen of Canada then a work permit required to work in Canada. Maintaining PR status while living/working in the US will be difficult.

I would get citizenship, if only so that you have the same as your child. That might be very important one day.

I'd go for Canadian citizenship, I got mine before coming back to UK 20 years ago, now I have three kids who all have dual nationality, and we will all be coming to Canada soon.

Plus its safer to travel internationally on a Canadian passport.

Don't you now have to swear that you plan to stay in Canada after you get citizenship?

You might need to live with your kid when you are old and grey. Or need to move here to support them should something shitty happen to them.

I've read news articles about that but it didn't seem to have made it into the new citizenship act. I also thought that the residency requirement was changing but cis website still says 3 of the past 4 years. I'd be fine with 4 of the part 6 too if it has changed and i just didn't see it

Safer - in what way?

Not currently, no. But the new citizenship act has an "intent to reside in Canada" provision. It's likely to come into force next Summer.

Absolutely not. That would never become a requirement or there would have been more than one class of Canadian citizen created. Once you have citizenship you have all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, no less.

In your situation you should get your citizenship before you leave. Just be aware that it is a very lengthy process.

With this in mind - I recommend applying now. Especially given what happened yesterday.
