Default Moving back to Uk cheque trouble

Hi there.

We are moving back to uk due to another lovely working relocation and this time we will have to say goodbye for real to Vancouver.
Last year has been a bit though as wife got a big car crash and now dealing with ICBC and lawyer and else regarding that.
We will move the case to Uk where she will follow up with specialists.
The problem is that ICBC is willing to refund money (like always been over here) for any expenses made for specialists but will be all issued by cheques.
We are talking about possibly another 10 15 cheques which will arrive over the next year of the claim.
The lawyer we hired told us that the only way to get the money back is via cheque and ICBC doesn't deal with direct debit or so.
Do you know if we are allowed to deposit a Canadian cheque in UK soil?

We re absolutely flattered about the situation but apparently this is the only way to deal with.

Thanks ppl.

Can't they be deposited into your Canadian bank account and you can transfer the funds across?

Deposit into Canadian acct, use something like transferwise https://transferwise.com/ to transfer to UK acct at a really good rate.

You could add a designate (friend/family still here) with the ability to deposit into your account or do eDeposit from your mobile.

I do Use Transferwise. but this is slightly different as we will receive our cheque in England and not planning to come back here (Vancouver) for long time

You won't be able to deposit a Canadian Cheque at a UK bank - a cheque is just a series of numbers that tell the receiving bank what bank and bank account to pull the money from. This Canadian bank data is meaningless to a UK bank.

One solution might be to have cheques mailed to you in the UK, then use a banking app on your phone for your Canadian bank to take a photo of the cheque and deposit the cheque electronically, then transfer it once it clears.

right, so receiving the actual cheque in UK and eDeposit it over Canada with the bank app.
not a bad idea

Eh?

I deposit UK cheques to my Canadian account and Canadian cheques to my UK account all the time. The only issue is the exchange rate and the holding period but, those aside, it is perfectly feasible.

Did a bit of digging and found this thread. I may have been incorrect in my assumption:
paying canadian cheque into UK sterling account?

Seems like it is possible, though I am surprised I have to say.

Interesting, honestly thought this was impossible. My mistake!

but the real issue to me is (and maybe with your experience you can tell me more) why does Canada over use cheques? I mean, I don't get why it's all about cheques when a direct deposit over bank accounts would be so easy.

Jeez is almost 2020.

Because it's not the UK. When we were in the UK in September we wondered why all the fresh fruit and vegetables were in plastic packaging. Jeez it's almost 2020! Different countries = different ways of doing things.

Ask your lawyer to agree to deposit the funds.into his/her trust account.and then permit them to wire the funds to you. It should be possible to do that if nothing else works.
