Englandia,

haven't read all the responses here as there are rather alot but my family just came to Malaysia from Durham last August (2010). We spent two years there and the environment is great for kids. It's a small place, though a city with lots of scenery etc. Near to Newcastle and great for going to the Lake District. Our kids went to Durham school ( a co-ed private school) which they loved. There is also a good govt school called Durham Johnston (co-ed)with a brand new campus. Framwellgate is apparently a fair school too. The Durham High School for girls (private). Fees for private can be pretty steep, check out the websites. I think Durham is a great place to bring up kids though it may be difficult for your wife if she is not working. There is a large international student community due to the university but it may be more difficult to mingle as there isn't an expat group as such and although the people are friendly most have known each other since their school days so it's not easy to break in.
