Moved: Using Electrical Goods in Canada

Hi we are moving to Calgary in Feb and the house we have bought has a 220v power point for the washer/dryer. Does anyone know if this means we can take our english washing machine and tumble dryer?

Im affraid not, yes they would work but because they are not approved for use over there and anything was to happen eg a fire your insurance would be null and void. Its not a true 240v as over here not bore you with the detail unless ur interested.

Pendleside wizard already has answered your question.

Just FYI, if you want to know more about this topic, there is an article in the Canada section of the BE Wiki that is entitled Compatibility of Goods. There is some good information in that article, but nothing has yet been written about white goods.

At the end of the above mentioned article, there is a link to a good article entitled Should I bring my electrical goods? The latter article is in the USA section of the Wiki. Since electrical goods in the USA and Canada essentially are the same, the contents of that article are applicable to Canada as well.

There are many previous threads about Canadian electricity that you can find by using the forum's search function. An example is an April 2007 thread entitled electricity supply.

Hope that helps.
