quite right they are morons but i would use a much worse word. why do british kids have this attitude? i am 36 and would not dare do any of this when i was young so what has gone so wrong in 20 years? a good dose of national service may put them right :curse:. maybe its the bloody do gooders we have in this country. a good smack round the ear when i stepped out of line did it for me and the threat of the cane at school

Just a quick comment, yours sons electrical apprenticeship will be worth nothing in Canada, he may get a partial credit for year one of a the training in Canada, but he will still have to do a 3/4 year apprenticeship 20% college based as he has not worked enough hours at trade to qualify to even sit the Canadian exam. My son is in the same boat and isn't thanking me for it, having done 2 years at college and a year as an apprentice!!:curse:

Why does the society tollerate it is what get me. How come decent people dont find those scrotes and "educate" them one way or the other.
As someone else said, if it happened here the hoses would be turned on them and they would think twice about their actions. Same seems to go for grafitti and littering to some extent...there is very little of either in my community, partly I think because kids are well connected to their community, they just dont think to do these thigs as its sort of like damaging their own property...plus everyone knows everyone else, so word would soon spread as to who did what, and consequences would follow.
Why are there no consequences for all the antisocial crap that goes on in the UK now, and perhaps more worryingly, why do people think this is an entertaining thing to do in the first place, is there really nothing more fullfilling for them to do, are they that disconnected and disenfranchised from society?

It's there granted, but I was struck by how much more graffiti and litter there was in the UK than say Toronto last time I visited, even with all the CC cameras watching your every move.

I've always wondered as it must be a reasonable % of people who litter in the UK (so it can't always be someone else) is that if these people emigrate, do they still litter in their new country?

Dunno. Round here they organise local citizen volunteers to go trash picking in the spring to clean up the roadsides. I suspect that sort of civic mindedness is unheard off in the UK nowadays.

I think I see as much litter dropped here, however somebody else will pick it up and put it in the bin
In the UK there are no volunteers and every body expects their local council to do it whist still bitching about how much tax they have to pay

One thing i have noticed since working in a small town Ontario hospital is how lovely the children are. They all do as their parents ask them to, there are no prima donna tantrums and screaming and refusals. They are a delight to xray.
I dont know what makes the difference but the parents just talk to the child, explain that it needs to be done and it is.
Maybe thats an offshoot of the "lifetsyle"
Last night we booked a holiday in England for this May. I hope the visit will remind us of why we moved because I have lost sight of that.

There was a time a while ago when she was getting regular Xrays. Bribery usually worked. X ray techs need a good selection of stickers I think

While watching BBC tv news last night I was amazed to see an item about how often UK firefighters are ATTACKED by mobs of youths, throwing rocks and cutting the fire hoses. Video of masked kids throwing rocks and firemen being hurt while trying to fight fires. The BBC news report stated that the Firefighters Union has reported that in one year, 2005, over 1500 incidents of this type occurred in Britain. That works out to about 3 attacks , each day of the year.
I was amazed that this happens so much in Britain . I have NEVER heard of such a thing happening in Canada, EVER. Here the fire fighters are our heros , and are rated as the MOST trusted members of our Canadian society.
The tone of the BBC news item was that UK firefighters are afraid to go out to fire calls, because of the danger of being injured by gangs of kids. If that happened here, in Canada, and it dosen't, the fire hoses would be turned on the attackers, for sure. Dripping wet and knocked on their backsides, they would be easy to identify and arrest, I think.
Is this an example of " British lifestyle " ?

i'm still up and down and all over the place. i am rapidly approaching the point of no return when my job in the uk will not be easy to move back to and i will lose my rank/seniority/pension. this is making me think far too much of all the good things back home and the bad things here. i should count my blessings more, it is far far better here for all the reasons mentioned and more. i am going skiing this week, 50 mins drive, one straight road, no traffic, no roadworks, $50 for the whole day, 24 runs. i cannot remember the last time i heard an obnoxious foul mouthed idiot outside my home trying to pull out my plants in the garden, deposit litter or be sick. my home/car is safe. we had a burglary in the neighborhood last week, made front page of the paper, there is outrage, mounties have been called to task and the homewatch is on board, no apathy here.
never underestimate though the pull of sentimentality.

It might interest you to know that.................One out of every three adults in Canada is a volunteer, in some way.
So, with that in mind, is it any wonder that Canada is a much more socially involved society than the UK is ? As some one else pointed out, if kids are involved in their own community, they won't be attacking people or property.
A recent CBC tv documentary about teen gangs in Glasgow was a case in point. The kids were all under 16 but they bragged about their knife fights, and were happy to show off their scars and wounds. Staggering about drunk in front of the camera, and the audio was more BLEEPING than actual sentences or words. My wife and I both said.........Dead end kids, they will be prison in another two years, at that rate.
Is this one of the main reasons why so many UK people are leaving their country, to come to Canada? I think so.
