Moved: canada banks
Hi guys and girls:)
Moving out to Canada in spring and back out there in October to put a deposit down on a house, but my dilemma is how do you open a Bank account in Canada from here in UK so you can transfer money out before hand. When you speak to the banks on the phone it's like banging your head against a brick wall Any idea's please help someone my heads getting a bit sore!!!:eek: Paul |

See the thread "opening an account on a reccie trip" started by "alvic" and the one on "transferring funds in sterling" by "thegarfields". You can find them both low down on the "Canada" page before you click onto "Maple Leaf" etc. There is loads of info in these that should answer your question. Use the search function if you want more. There is loads of other info on here too....well worth a browse. I only joined last week and I have learned loads. Everyone is so helpful and friendly too. The Canadian banking system is probably the best in the world, seamless, accessible, you just have to watch charges.
It is an ATM, NOT A hole in the Wall. |

Nope,ATM's ,and having traveled the world the reliability of our banks are second to none, the ATM's actually work, as opposed to the ABM's which may not always work as opposed to the Holes in the Wall which rarely work.

I emailed several banks and the only helpful reply was from RBC Halifax branch. I had to fill out a application form (emailed) provide a letter from my bank and then prove my ID to an employee of RBC (not in UK!) or an embassy official. I live in Cornwall so opted for a day trip via Ryan Air to London to the embassy at Trafalgar Square. I phoned up to check the routine back in April and was told to turn up with my passport and all would be well. In May i arrived at the embassy.....and was told the routine had changed. I had to have my ID varified by the foriegn and commonwealth office at Admiralty Arch! No probs just down the road. FCO told me that I had to have my passport photocopied and signed by a solicitor! Nightmare it was 1000 and the embassy closes at 1 PM. I was directed round the corner to a friendly solicitors who would help me out. They duly helped me out, and relieved me of £10 (For a photocopy!!). Back to the FCO. Recieved my ticket C68.....now seeing B76! Its now 1100! At 1230 was called forward and had my credentials checked, advised to wait for reciept of paperwork.......and relieved of £26! 1250 recieved paperwork and hurried to the embassy. Managed to see the official (lovelly and helpful lady!), varified and stamped my paperwork....sorted....and relieved of £22 for the pleasure. sent off the paperwork and within a few days got notification that the account was opened and available for deposits only. Have deposited money and when we get to Halifax in August we see the bank to finalise a few things and it will turn into a full blown Canadian Account. It is possible and there is alot of wall banging. The only snag is getting your ID varified, but if you can get to London or one of the other consuls then its not too bad. If you want to know any further info like contacts or procedures then dont hesitate to let us know. Hope this tale of derring do has been of use Bob :thumbsup: |

A Friend of mine landed from China, No English.
It took less than an hour to get him an account and a bank Card, we just went to Bank with Mandarin service. In China such a procedure could take weeks or months. |

Steve, my Son, he has been there for almost 10 years, no signs of returning.
