Move to Winnipeg
Hi coming on a 3 weeks research trip to Winnipeg in March/April and we are applying for Skilled Worker Visa as we speak. Does anyone have any useful tips on Winnipeg? We feel a bit stuck really as our Visa has just been changed as we have now been advised to go straight for the permanent residency as hubby is a welder. Its messed our timescales up a bit. We were coming in March hoping to have job interviews and now there is no pont in this until much later down the line. Any advice or just being able to talk to others in same boat will be ace!!!

Isn't everywhere in Canada at the mo? It is the height of winter after all! Apparently Calgary's got it worse at -30! Am sure the Peg will catch up though

Re: Move to Winnipeg
I can't imagine the CFL and AHL being very big reasons with UKers. Be aware Winnipeg is not the centre chosen by most immigrants. It is right in the centre of the country and climate is described as 10 months of good sleddin' and two months of black flies. Exaggerations for sure, but it is very cold for most of the winter. It may be cold in Calgary at present but the winter is much more varied, temperature wise, than W'peg. It is not a bad looking city, but not somewhere I would choose to live.

Re: Move to Winnipeg
Yes we def dont want to live in the city. We are using it as a base to focus around. We are proper country bumkins!!! and will look for somewhere rural to live. We have friends who live about 50 mins from Winnipeg who moved from UK. We intend to put our 3 weeks to good use and source places we like dont like etc, but some of it will no doubt have to come down to where hubby can get a welding. I have always work in Doctors, clinics and hospitals so have been told I will have no probs getting work in most places.
The cold is something we have had lots and lots of discussions about!!

Winnipeg is a great City to live in.
When its cold normally the sun is shining brightly. But if there is a wind blowing then its really cold, but with the right clothes thats not a problem.
We normally have 4 really good Summer months, and it can get pretty hot, about a month of spring and about 6 weeks of autumn.
Outside of the downtown core there is very little crime.
It has all the culture, restaurants, shops, leisure facilities etc., that you could wish for.
Economically its a bit of an island, so it tends not to have the Boom & Bust culture of Calgary, people here expect more stability.
Its a great City to bring up children in, I find that though people may leave Winnipeg in their youth to seek fame and fortune, many return here to bring up their children.
We've lived here for 10+ years now, and love it.

Re: Move to Winnipeg
Hi samjr400, we have been here for about 2 yrs, also moved from Yorkshire.
The school system is good, spring summer and autumn are great, winter for the mot part is ok, although lqst couple of days it is -40,s with the windchill and this is suppoed to hang around all week. You do not spend too long outside in -40's.
There are plenty of activities for the kids, all the winter sports,yr round soccer along with all the north american sports.
How old are your kids? I don't know much about the welding trade but I have a couple of friends working in the local hospital.
If you have any specific questions email me, march/April will hopefully see the now on its way out although we had a bit of snow in May this yr.
Good luck

been here 12 yrs
Crime can be found everywhere in the world if you look for it.
Hopefully the snow is still around when you get here, as spring is the sloppy dirty time. Cleaning crews wouldn't have been out and the place looks a mess for the 1st few weeks.
Did you read this info about welders
As for black flies really see them in town, lakes & countryside might be a different story but definately more mossies than flies.
Wpg is great for those who like the rural lifestyle listern to your friends and get them to share their neighbours stories. so you can build a good picture of everyday life.
Have fun.

And if Winnipeg wasn't attractive enough, Ikea has just announced they will be setting up shop here in the next few years.
Cue weekends of mass allen key frustration.
