Motorcycle licence

Has anyone managed to convert their UK license to a class M in Canada?

I have contacted the Province website and DriveTest. They sent me a fairly generic email:

'If a person wants to drive a motorcycle in Ontario and does not have a valid motorcycle licence from one of the other Canadian provinces or territories; Canadian Forces Europe; Australia; Northern Ireland; Switzerland or the United States and is able to provide a letter from the country where they have the licence indicating they have more than two years driving experience with a full driving licence, they may be able to skip the mandatory wait times and advance to the G2 exit test. Please see the information provided on the webpage at: Out of Country Drivers

If the original letter is not in English or French then it must be officially translated by an accepted translator. For information about accepted translators please see the webpage at: Translator Qualifications'

I have used these links but they simply refer to a G licence and not an M class licence.

I hope someone can help?

Mine was transferred no problem but that was Manitoba, some didn't get theirs and turns out depends which office you surrendered your license at can be a major factor.
Ask before you hand it over and if they say no try a different location.

In Ontario, no exchange agreement for GB:

Driver's Handbook

(Qc was the same: I had to retake driving test for motorcycles. It was hilariously easy :) )

Did you have to wait nearly 2yrs to get a 'proper' bike?

Nope. But this was in QC, years ago.

Mine was swapped straight over, this however is not the norm.

Wait until you see some of the insurance quotes for motor cycle riders it might make you want to not consider swapping over or even riding one.

It's ok, I'll sell my house in the UK. That should just about cover it (?).

Mine is no more expensive than my car.

You are in BC he is going to Ontario. Sure he can shop around but Im betting it wont be as cheap as what he is used to paying. OP check this link in and put in various postal codes for areas of Ontario and notice the difference.

Both my Husbands and I have bikes and both bikes are under $500 to insure (that's for both) we have the equivalent of third party as neither bike was very spendy.

Lame bet. We all know insurance throughout Canada is generally dearer than the UK.

Thanks for the replies. As usual it looks like it will be a case of winging it and luck of the draw when it comes to office/civil servant.

Is it just me that thinks the EU is more unified than Canada and all its Provinces?

With regards to insurance I was paying £130 fully comp for a Ducati 1198, so I don't expect to be anywhere near that figure. Adding a zero may help!?
