Mornin Calgarians....
The count down has begun. We are flying out on our first research visit (plus a little holiday in the mountains). Any advice on how to handle the rednecks and not go straight into a store and purchase a cowboy hat???!!
Simonhouse seems to know about real life there, why not so a happy bunny??? |

The Stampede is fun first time around, but gets a bit tedious, although some people who grew up here think its the best thing ever.
PM if you have any specific questions :) |

I'm from Glasgow and I hate rain.
Vancouver gets more rain than Glasgow, nuff said for me. Everyone I've ever met in Calgary who has lived in Vancouver has tried to convince me just how wonderful the place is. Q: If it's so wonderful, why are they in Calgary? A: Because it's too expensive to do anything. The real Yorkshire/Lancashire thing in Alberta is between Calgary & Edmonton - although we really enjoyed beating the Canucks in the playoffs. On a different note - the Edinburgh Festival is a pain in the butt if you live there, traffic gets really screwed up. The Calgary Stampede is much less disruptive - if you don't want to participate, you don't have to. |

In the interests of those who refuse to hear anything bad said against the place, I will lie through my teeth and say its the best city in the world.

I'm not going to complain too much, as I am making more effort than ever before to actually like the place. If I start talking about its problems I'll get depressed again.
But, what gets to me the most? The 'perfect attitude'. The way Calgarians seem oblivious to their problems. Calgary must be the only place in the world where the number of cumulative murders decrease as the year goes on. Early this year we had over 8 murders. The news will now report 3 or 4. No doubt it will be 2 by the end of the year. --- Don't worry about the beer. The oil will have dried up long before the beer does! |

Solution: You'll have to get away from all those happy Calgarians and find some place more morose. ;) I'll bet all the festivities around the Stampede are particularly hard on you. |

Go ahead, criticize Calgary all you want. The public wants to know what's good and bad about the place. Hopefully, any comments will be a tad more substantive than your prior ones. |
