That was what we thought but they want us to return to being learners. After we have done the learner test we then have to submit our licence to the Government and then they go to the issuing area and confirm that it is a valid licence. After 3 months you can take the test instead of waiting for a year as normal learners. In the 3 months as you have a learner licence you can't drive without another licence holder.

The Alberta website is not as specific as it should be but usually the expectation is that you should take a test within the 90 days they specify, and in this period you can use your foreign licence.

It's only if you fail the test that you will have problems.

We are in the process of applying to move to Canada with my job as a nurse but i am beating myself up over the dilemna of when is it best for my children age 13 and 9.Who are both happy in good schools here. Is it going to be really detrimental totmove my child who will then be 14 into a school system that is possibly quite different to the UK or is it quite similar.
Any body with any opinions/experience in a similar situation would be gratefully received. It is VAncouver we are possibly moving to.
Thanks Ali

Hi
We Have been in Calgary for 9 weeks and brought a 12 year old girl and an 8 year old boy. I only have praise for the school system. Our daughter went into Junior High - YIKES - but was buddied with another girl from day 1. She has about 4 or 5 nationalities in her class and everyone helps everyone else. They wear their own clothes but anything goes, there is no need to be a fashion plate!! 24 in her homeroom and my son in grade 3 has 18 in his class. Elementary seems to be more like England was before the hang up with testing!! My daughter is marked and we received a report card after a onth, homework is set and they are expected to do it. No excuses. But then praise is given for good work. My son has an agenda(diary) and we have to sign every day to show we have seen it.
All I can say is both of ours have settled well and they say they have no wish to return to the UK. Children are allowed to be children out here.
Good luck with everything Julie
