Is there more opportunities in canada for etc a new career,i am 28 and dont really have a career in england,i have just had dead end jobs,if i do go to canada i am thinking about taking a course to get a class 1 licence or plumbing.

Truck driving would be the easier option has it would only be a 3 month course and i would have a full class 1

Plumbing would be better in the long run but i cant afford to do a full time course in plumbing,an apprentiship would be ideal as then i would be able to support my self while i learn.

I always hear how great canada is and there is more jobs but is it actually true ?, i worked in canada for a year but my options were limited as i was only on a bunac, i am now currently waiting for my pr to be processed which should be here very soon

there are skills shortages in certain professions. But would you go live anywhere in the UK to get a career, because you could have to go a limited number of places in Canada to get work?

Sounds like permanent residence is a no go for you at the moment, so you'd need to get a job offer and get LMO (unless you have other ties to Canada).

Don't see Canada as a solution to your problems, see it as an opportunity for change, but you might not be certain what that change is!

Hi sorry for the mis understanding, i have just been accepted for a pr,yes i would like a change but would anyone say there is actually more opportunities in driving or plumbing,my prefered route would be driving

Here in Canada they hold great store in certification and many careers require it.

My advice is,

• Pick something you enjoy, find out what the local certification requirements are and start studying.
• Find out what the local market needs in your chosen career, and start trying to organise experience in that area, consider volunteering to get the experience.

Canadians view volunteering as a positive attribute.

I found a new lease of ambition when I arrived and I think that if you have what it takes there are few limitations here (once you have the all important Canadian experience)

I hear Taxi driving is a great profession. After all, even Doctors change to this career upon moving so it must be right.

Richo thats good to know,i got to know a casino taxi driver while i was there last year and he said he would like me to work for him,i would just have to go on a 6 week course to get my licence.

I consider my self a hard worker lol,last time i worked in canada i was allowed to work as many hours as i wanted but the pay wasnt great as it wasnt a skilled job.

Seems lots of people (canadians included) pay over money to get an A-Z license, only to find jobs thin on the ground the other end. Those jobs there are dont seem to pay as well as anticipated, and overheads for running your own truck are on the increase. Maybe check out the trucking forum? Long hours away from home required for a living wage is my impression.

Plumbing is not all rosey either, finding an apprenticeship will be a challenge. Wasnt fledermauses hubby laid off recently, he was trying to get his red seal that way, and he already has experience?

I have been looking on the job sites and for class 1 drivers and they average no more than 15 dollars an hour which isnt great but it is nova scotia,it would be a better job than what i was doing last year there and i would enjoy it more.i have contacted 1 school and they want 9080 dollars and that does not include medical,part of the 12 weeks is a 4 week internship to give u some experience.

Leeps, here is much like the UK for truck driving, you need experience before anyone will take you on but if no-one takes you on how do you get experience, catch 22.
My company wants a minimum 5 yrs exp.

Have you thought of dentistry? If you can get into a good practice you can make a decent living here.

I just did a long distance move within Canada a few months back and got talking to the driver when they were loading and unloading the truck. The trucking industry is as hard hit as any. The long distance moving firm I was using said their business was down at least 20% and they were by no means the worst off.

(I also suspect that some of the firms I had in in to quote deliberately low-balled weight estimates to get the work. Apart form the firm I used, all of the others underestimated by 25% on the weight of the consignment.)
