More NS Questions...

Hi there everyone, thought it was about time I actually registered instead of just lurking around!
My Girlfriend and I have just got out TWP back from the high commision so now it looks like its all actually happening :) We do have a few questions for those of you in the Halifax area though... We've been told that Clayton Park is a very nice area to live (as we will be renting initially) and will be handy for both of us to get to work (the airport for me) and maybe Halifax for the OH. Does anyone know any Rental agencies that would hold listings of Clayton Park and the surrounding area's at all? Also, how soon could wemove into a place once we'd viewed it? Here it can take months and don't really fancy a hotel for a great length of time.
Thanks for any help.

You could look on www.kijiji.ca as many rentals are listed there. I know a few people who have rented and have found places quite quickly. Great news about your WP, I home that you have a smooth move over. I will be moving over in August so maybe we will meet sometime.

Can't bear it here any longer. Also my LMO runs out 31st august so would have to re-apply and can't be bothered. Want the boys to start the new school year there rather than half way through.

It would be good if we sold the house as we are using all our savings to but the NS house and so cash will be a bit tight for cars, shipping etc., but hey-ho, you only live once. I will just have to be nice to the bank manager.

Actually, we have a viewing tomorrow and an open house on 10th May so you never know, we may be lucky.

Just a thought, but you might want to check out the area around downtown Dartmouth as well - it's closer to Halifax Airport (and you don't have to negotiate the bridges in the morning) and if you're OH is working in downtown Halifax the ferry is a great way to commute!

It's also still pretty cheap (compared to the UK) to rent/buy there - we rent out a couple of flats there in Rose Street (3-beds) for $700-800 a month (plus bills).

http://www.viewit.ca/ might be of some use!

As for timelines, if a place is empty, then you should be able to move in ASAP, subject to reference checks. The depth of the checks will depend on the agent, but most will require some reference of some sort, and proof that you're employed/aren't on income support etc.

Hope thats of some use...

To be honest, I dont know Clayton Park much, but I wouldnt necessarily rent there either. Having said that, we are renting in the illustrious Spryfield, though we are technically only just in that area. It all depends what you want. Clayton Park to me seems like it is just a crowded development with lots of condos and townhouses chucked up around busy roads (sorry Clayton Park) and I doubt it is cheap to rent there. I would consider looking to rent in the out lying areas, like Bedford and those areas down the 102, or Dartmouth.

We found our house and were moved in within a week. We could have done it in a day, but we were staying short term somewhere and had to sort ourselves out. Most places are empty and need tenants asap, so no worries there! I would come here, stay somewhere for a week and get it sorted. But look at loads before you commit to an area or a house. Also think carefully what you can afford, dont forget in your calculations that tax is roughly 1/3rd so you really know what your biweekly income will be. We are very happy with our rent, it includes all utilities, but that is unusual.

Good luck! Hope the move goes smoothly for you guys!

Thanks for all the replys guys, we've been looking on kijiji quite a bit lately, there definately seems to be quite a few places available :)
We're also looking into Dartmouth as a possible location, especially if its easier to get up to the airport in the morning

Hi - we rent in Clayton Park and love it. It is close to everything and works perfectly for us. We rent a 3 bed townhouse and it isn't anymore expensive than properties we looked at all around Halifax and Dartmouth - PM if you want more details - I may be able to point you in the direction of a rental agent that may help you. Good luck.

If you are in Clayton Park the 102 runs right by here and goes directly to the airport - it is around 20 mins drive away and you can pick up a bus to take you into downtown Halifax no problemo.

Don't forget Bedford! Easy for the airport and easyish for downtown! got a girlfriend who's a realtor in Bedford if you need any pointers (not touting for business for her - she's just really helpful!)
