Could I just ask what we need to budget for monthly .

After moving and shipping expenses we will have about £90,000 left.

Property on PEI is reasonable so we will hopefully not have a mortgage or car to pay for but how comfortable do you think we will be on one wage? We have worked out after tax hubby should be bringing home $3000.

I need to find out what the other bills are likely to add up to. I would like everything included ie gas, electric, phone , cable , hydro, insurances etc.

Please give me worst case sscenarioI would rather be over than under. Sorry if this is probing but I like a rough idea

Heres what I pay

Cable TV (full package), Phone, Internet (High Speed) bundled together is $120 a month

Cell phone (I use this a little too much) $70

Hydro (for 1 bed apartment) $120 every 2 months

Bank Fees (oh yeah you have to factor in that the banks charge you every months to have a bank account, ours is unlimited which means you can have as many transactions as you like) $13.99 a month

Thats all we pay sorry dont have gas and insurance LOL, hope my little bit helps though

You will be suprised. It all depends on what you doing house wise, if renting or buying. But our main bug bearer is forgetting about the taxs. Like we bought a house and then we pay $4000 tax which i didnt know about, i dont think im that stupid but you really just dont think.

Our monthlys in small town Ontario, older 3 bed house.

Oil (heating water and house) $230 per month
Electric $130-160 a month
Cable TV $52 per month ("plus" package... to get the footy)
Phone $30 for service, about $15 for long distance charges
Insurance $140 for two cars(7+ years no claims), $80 for house per month
Internet..we dont bother, dial up is too slow. Satelite link would be ~$100 a month.
Property taxes ~$120 a month
Bank Charges...none. Presidents Choice is fee free. Unlimited transactions.
Cell Phone. PAYGO minimum is ~$10 a month

About $1000 a month on utilities then , another $1000 would more than likely be spent on food , clothes and fuel

It would be good if we could save the rest (in an ideal world, will need to apply strict discipline ! )

When the children are older I will go back to work but I am looking forward to being a stay at home mum for a while

We easily spend $1000 on food and petrol alone. Probably closer to $1500.

On $3000net a month you should survive, but dont forget to plan to save for retirement (RRSP) too. Mortgage free will help of course, but dont forget to factor in property taxes. How efficient / insulated the house is will also make a huge difference too.

If your mortgage free yes for sure, But if not no, we bring in about $3000 for the pair of us and we just about make it with a bit fo savings for an emergency and there is only 2 of us.

We hope to get a mortgage in a couple of years (if we settle and obtain PR).

We intend to buy a property to rent out, hopefully this will become our retirement.

Not sure how plausible this is but it seems ok on paper:o
We have pensions that will be frozen here but they will more than likely be worthless in 25 years time, Unfortunately we can't cash them in. More money thrown down the drain !!

It depends on your consumption as well. We have a 3 bed detached smallish house in Toronto and our gas for heating (furnace) and hot water averages to about $180/month (higher in winter lower in summer) and our electricity (hydro) is about $150 every two month billing cycle. don't subscribe to TV jsut the internet and that's about $45/month and don't pay for a Bell land line just use vonage which is $20/month. Cell phone is $45/month for two phones on a family plan with free calls between members so rarely any extra charges. So that's about $440/month. The mortgage amount of course will depend on the amount and interest rates and so forth. Taxes will depend where you buy a house, ours are a couple of grand I think but we get the bank to pay it for us and roll it into the mortgage payment (it doesn't cost anything extra) and means you don't forget or get large tax bills you weren't expecting. Then it depends where you live. We have live in toronto now and lived in Newmarket an hour or so north and commuted into the city and haven't needed to buy a car yet so that saves a lot of money. other bills would of course depend on spending habits like credit card bills etc. A lot depends on consumption and lifestyle choices.

In Calgary - 50 year old house (original furnace):

Phone - $65 - includes evening long distance anywhere in Canada
Cell - $30 (don't use it much though)
Cable - $95 - includes internet
Gas - $107 - budget amount so its the same summer and winter
Electric (water, sewer, garbage pickup included) - ~$120
Property Tax - $140 (remember its per month)
House insurance - $70
Car Insurance - $90 (I'm actually surprised how close my car insurance is to my house insurance)

Total $717 per month

Makes me wonder where I can cut back.

In Montreal (single person)

Cell phone: $30 Can per month (company plan with Rogers)
Internet cable with Sympatico: $20 Can per month

The rest of the utilities are included in my rent so I can't tell

If it helps I also spend about $65 per month in monthly pass for the tube and probably $40 can per week for food

condo fee: 290 (gas for fireplace, heat, hot water, building maintenance, garbage, insurance, recycling)
electric: 50
property tax: 100
