That is bloody awful.:eek::eek::eek:

And very, very, expensive.

Toronto has a long history of bland buildings and has a kind of architectural inferiority complex, thus any weird thing can get built here so long as the designer seems important and it costs a lot. I'm trying to find a picture of the AGO which is built on stilts, presumably in case of flooding on McCaul St.

That's the one. Thank you.

Does Slough have anything similar?

Yeah, the good old Alberta Advantage, eh? Smoke and mirrors, my friends.

Take this Ottawa Sun article entitled Where the jobs are by Anne Howland, dated Feb 20, 2007:
Jobs may be plentiful in oil-rich Alberta, but anyone looking for the best Canadian opportunities combining good pay with a low cost of living might be better off in Saskatchewan, parts of Ontario or PEI. [emphases mine]
Read the full article for more details.

The original poster's enquiry seems to focus on the cost of living component of standard of living. But standard of living doesn't depend only on outgoings; it depends also on incomings. Factors to consider are your qualifications, what line of work you could get into and whether or not you would be in a position to start a business (or would be interested in starting a business). There are varying levels of opportunity for people with different qualifications in different parts of the country.

But then quality of life is not comprised only of standard of living. In fact the original poster's stated reasons for wanting to leave the UK seem to be quality of life rather than standard of living issues.

So we seem to have gone way beyond comparing apples and oranges.

Newfoundland. Or Ottawa, or PEI, or NS. It's a big country. Consider more than BC & Ontario.

A major issue for an immigrant to the GTA looking to take over a convenience store would be the language barrier. Convenience stores in the UK are run by a range of people, many of them of Indian or Pakistani heritage. Here, independent convenience stores are run by Koreans and, if you want to compete, you'll need to join the Ontario Korean Business Association and buy from their co-op. I doubt they do any business in English or French. Similarly, motels and, increasingly, independent petrol stations are run by people from the sub-continent, there's less of a language barrier there as they tend to use English but, still, an anglophone might experience cultural difficulties in those businesses.

Thanks for your responses guys, but I won't be looking to get back into the retail trade one i've sold up and left the UK. I would continue with my career in the IT industry. I never left my job as it was a shift based role and was easy enough to work round my business, so I continued doing my business and career.

My line of work is Network Engineering (data, voice and wireless), I have 10 years experience as an engineer and 3 years in management in this area , so will look for similar type of roles.

I hope this helps...
