Missing home

Hello, everyone.

I'm an eighteen year-old student in Canada. I'm studying Mathematics, Economics and History at the University of Toronto. I've been living here since about 2007, so I've spent quite a while abroad (relative to my age).

But Canada's just not the same. It's almost so diverse that it lacks anything substantial. It's an amalgamation of strip-malls and fast-food restaurants; where people live together, but don't have much in common. That's not to say I haven't met loads of great people - but there's not very much culturally; no common history or traditions. It's all rather... bland.

I'm just venting a bit - but I'm desperately home-sick. I miss the castles, green grass, proper sweets, proper television and real fish and chips - wrapped up in newspaper and dripping with grease!

But I hope to go back after I get my Undergraduate! I've even got my greedy eyes on Oxford!

Anyone else feel the same?

Hi

I would just say hang in there. I have another friend in Canada feeling the same. It has made me think twice about moving to Canada but when I weigh things up I can only think that there's possibly more opportunities for the younger ones leaving education than in the U.K, at this present time. It's hard here, kids leaving school/uni and nothing much to go onto.

Yeah I agree the U.K has got some rather tight knit quaint areas and history but we too are very diverse here. It's the way of the world, migration!!!! The U.K has changed, so no difference really.

I would say move to another province and see another side of Canada, you never know what's around that corner.

Good Luck and chin up! :)

Angela

After being here myself for a little over 7 years, and having travelled a fair bit within Canada, your description is a fair one regarding Urban Canada in the main IMO. Living in Rural Canada mitigates the banality for me to a considerable degree. And yes, I avoid such as Toronto if at all possible. I am not far off 65 now so we are looking at the country through very different eyes however, I see what you see to a considerable degree.

Best of luck.....

I'm sorry Toronto is a bit bland and dull. Don't give up on Canada just yet though, you can go to another province where there are cities that are just as exciting. Or maybe try rural canada because there is always lots to do there, especially in the winter when it's frozen for 8 months of the year - just think of the activities and opportunities. Remember life is what you make it, and travelling to other countries at your age is probably not worth it when you could live somewhere like, say, Moncton. U2 played there once, what more could any 18 yo could ask for?

I came here as a teenager 41 years ago-still trying to get myself together and go home, even though I know home is not what it was when I was a boy.

Just get your degree and leave. Canada will be none the worse for you not staying here.

Oh, yeah, I plan to piss off after I get my degree. But I've still got a good four years to go. I suppose I'll find a nice pub to drink with all the other dreary expatriates. :p

On a lighter note, The Walking Dead is on tonight. What a load of tripe, but I'll watch anything with zombies.

Hi there.
Couldnt help replying to your message.
Could i just say , i am in the UK ( HOPEING ) to immirgrate to Canada.
Been here all my life, got a good job, travelled all round the world from italy , to New Zealand. Its sad but the time has come to leave this place , even though it will always be home and all my family and friends are here. Never been to Toronto but i cant imagine for a minuete its got the same depressed mentallity as the UK.I now feel that the UK has so much unrest, everybody seems so Angry and dis-content, whether it be with the general state of the economy , illegal immigrants , or just because you have more than someone else !!!Nobody seems to have time anymore and basic manners seem to be a thing of the past.Overall, it sounds like you have a good future ahead and amazing Options.
Choose wisely !!!! The UK is not the place it used to be i"m afraid and getting worse .
Sorry to go on so much.........Take care for now !!......... Shreky
