Re: misery at Vancouver housing cost?
A bit pricey for the space your getting..
The half a months salary part, not sure its unique to this sort of alternative housing, using my wife's salary as I have not been paid yet, our rent eats up 2 weeks take home salary.
Insane if you think about it, have to work 2 whole weeks just to pay for housing.....
And we are not in a luxury apartment by any means, in fact this was the cheapest one we found that accepted dogs.
No idea if people take up offers for free or reduced rent for um discreet adventures with someone, but seems people are offering free or reduced rent for certain things.

Well why not combine the two?- buy a garage, park the car in it and set up a thriving "sex-for rent business/knocking shop" based on the back seat.

Re: misery at Vancouver housing cost?
Hi all,
We're also searching for rentals in the area and finding it so difficult...as we've 2 dogs and one is big..prob only 10% ads we come across allow dogs and mostly small. Plan is land first, find suitable housing before flying them over.
Looking at either downtown Vancouver or Burnaby/ New Westminster area.
As we'll be coming over as newcomers, how can we get around the references and credit checks? We can get our work in the UK for reference letter and show bank statement to show savings and can pay more upfront, do you think they'll consider this as we'll still be searching for jobs once we landed.

I remember reading the following article a month ago about the problem and might be worth a read

Thanks! That's great read and I fully understand the problem so preparing ourselves far in advance..we've a year yet before moving...
The problem is I doubt I can convince the landlord by showing up with my dogs..the big one..an Akita though friendly with humans doesn't like other dogs so pull a lot of ppl off! He's old and no one will want him even if I let me go to a good home!
So now we've to save upper over £2k to fly them over and pay for higher rent just for them
Some of those basement suites I seen that takes pets are just shocking..coming from a detached 4 beds in the Wiltshire countryside, I'm prepare to downsize but with some limits!

The price of a single dwelling home had gone up around 30% in a year so there is a huge bubble on the verge of popping.

Yes, we did in fact visited some new build in Maple Ridge during last visit and found a lovely townhouse at reasonable prices but looks like hubby will need to commute to New Westminster or Downtown for work which makes it a long commute!
Maybe it'll be easier for the dogs to buy a place if we can secure mortgage etc but we're unlikely to affiord anything near downtown area..at least I can't justify paying so much for a tiny den when the whole point of moving is to enjoy more of the nature..which makes Maple Ridge ideal if not the distance to town.

If your willingness my to look a bit further out you may have more look try Coquitlom or Maple ridge but it does depend where you will be working and how long a commute you want.

The market is too high for "normal people" in Vancouver and so the prices down the Fraser Valley have risen and also predicted to continue to do so as people have no chance of buying closer to, and in Vancouver.

I would think if foreign money and buyers dry up in Vancouver prices in general would drop?
BC as we know is just pricey. Not many areas in this large province with suitable employment and low\moderate housing costs.
At least for those who are not well skilled and in demand. Those folks have more flexibility.

Re: misery at Vancouver housing cost?
I suppose women are in general less likely to offer sex to a man in return for housing.
The ads seem to be mostly men offering women reduced or free rent for sex.
Best I could afford in Vancouver when I was there was a tiny room about the size of a walk in closet in a condo. Fit a twin bed, tv stand and small desk.
Being 6'3 I could not stand up as the floor to ceiling was only 6 feet. And there was no window or natural light.
Clearly an illegal suite but my upper limit was 500 so couldn't be picky.

What is Surrey like to live in?
Looking at house prices and they seems as though I may just be able to afford there, even if not as much space compared to Calgary.
