Anyone else going over on minimum funds?

I am. I wish i had more, but I don't, and I'm getting more than a little nervous on how i'm going to make do. I hadn't planned my life to work like this, I thought by now i'd have a cute guy in my life, a good stable job and some income behind me!

How much is minimum funds? It means different things to different people.

I presume they mean CIC's 'minimum funds' ($10,000 or so).

Indeed. Let me restate. Minimum funds as specified by CIC for your size of family or you as an individual.

Hi Caitilin,
I will be arriving in January with approx 12,000. As i'm by myself and have a job to go to I'm hoping this is enough for my first rent payments and security deposit, a cheap runaround and insurance e.t.c. As the job is on a 2 year TWP I didn't want burn bridges and to sell everything in the UK just in case it goes t*ts up.
Hoping to stay for good and sell up later.

Yep, I am the same as well with minimum funds for just me (maybe slightly over if the exchange rate perks up). Only skilled worker visa as well so I am nervous now about finding a job, especially with the current climate.

Going in March 09 so although i am not getting cold feet, I am getting nervous now that things will work out ok.....it has been a long time planning, wishing and waiting so I am determined to make it work :thumbsup:

Stating the obvious, I know, but I think the key thing is if you have a job to go to!

If you come over and have difficulty getting earning then your story is a whole lot different to somebody who goes straight to a well-paying job.

Even those coming as skilled workers, unless you have a substantial cushion of capital to take the pressure off, I'd recommend at least laying the foundations of a job if possible. It's scary how soon your savings will be eaten up in settlement and living until earning :eek:

I'm in the same boat too Caitlin - I'm hoping that with hard work and determination I can make it work. It's either try and survive there or here and I've come this far so I'm going to give it a damn good go!

I wont' have a job to go to though i'm more than happy and will try and do groudnwork before I go - and i've been working for myself and i'm happy to do that again as well - anything to keep the cash flowing somewhat.

I've done this before. Several times. I don't know why this one has me nervous and fussing.

Hi - I came over with out a job, a place to live and 2 suitcases.

I did have funds for a rental / furniture and buffer if I had to be out of work for a month or two aswell.

My priority was finding a rental, which thankfully was easy as I took over a former BE members apartment within 3 weeks. I then knuckled down on the job hunt, and thankfully got one within 10 days!

I'm in recruitment and at the moment things have slowed down (I work on temp however, perm may be different I can't tell you)....

Hopefully jobs will be more forthcoming in the New Year, but the credit pinch has hit Canada aswell, to a greater / lesser extent.

Be sure you can have funds for a rental, as you won't have any references for apartments - I just told him to look at my bank account as I didn't have my job then. Thankfully it worked!! :o

Hmm. Guess thats something ot think about too. I'm hoping perm will be there when i get there but i'm willing to take on anyting - at the moment i'm getting more work through freelancing than I am through job agencies (freelancing being signs at the supermarket offering IT services)...do you guys have that kind of signs in Mall's over there? community boards type things??

No idea on foreign refs - I'd never rented before, always owned my own places.

Cant answer your question about freelancing either. However you'll need to be registered with the Canadian and BC tax system in any case I assume.

Yes and no......I was surprised as I'm self-employed too. There are but you really have to hunt them out. Some disappeared before my eyes......can only find them in "No Frills" and "Food Basics" now in my community and some smaller hardware stores, oh and a local dollar store!!!
