Midnapore, Calgary

Re: Midnapore, Calgary
Older SW neighbourhood, has a lake, close to Shawnessy for EVERYTHING you could possibly need. Handy for C-Train (again Shawnessy), not too far from where Almost Canadian lives (yeah I know bit of a problem but hey ). Wouldnt be in my top ten of areas to live but that is only MY PERSONAL opinion.
I understand from work colleagues that live there, that it has a "crime problem". Exactly what that means, has never been explained to me.

It's not too bad but, like Butch, I wouldn't want to live there. If you want a lake community, then, in my opinion, there are much better ones to choose from. In my opinion, for such a "new' community, it has quite a run down feel about it. Yes, I know that Midnapore is as old as the hills, but it is surrounded by newer communities. It will be right up your street if you want lots of character.

Where in Midnapore is the house, the north side is a little rougher than the south side but nothing compared to say Forest Lawn

Hi.
Midnapore has the best curry house in Calgary, Motti Mahal, it is owned by a east indian called Bill, really nice bloke who lived in Faversham 20 odd years ago.
He certainly has transferred the taste of a good old ruby across the ocean
Midnapore is an older area, but is seems fine to me. I work for Shaw and have been in quite a few houses in the area and have not come across a bad one yet. Plus the added bonus you are right near Fishcreek as well.
Pm us if you like. Steve

I cycled through parts of Crescent Heights, Renfrew to Renfrew athletic park and was really impressed. I was under the impression that rule of thumb ignore the north east but that area went to last night has made more of an impession than the suburban areas that I have been to so far which have had that choclate box impression.
The houses were generally more individual, well cared for and really central. You could walk downtown. Maybe I just went through the good parts....
At any rate, hard to make these kindof decisions from a distance and the area that you're looking at is probably a very safe bet.

The house is on the south side of the Lake. I understand by Calgary Standards the Crime is higher than some other districts but is still only 7 crimes per 1000 of population, I live in what is considered a good area on the very southern edge of Greater London and the crime rate is 54 per 1000 population so I am not treating this as an issue. Our plan is to rent for a year then buy so if it doesnt turn out exactly how we percieve it we can move in 12 months. And after 12 Months in Calgary we will be in a much better position to choose a district to live in.
