Meat prices

Is meat such as beef, Lamb and Pork expensive in Canada compared to the U.K?

iaink Feb 19th 2007 8:50 am

Re: Meat prices

Beef is cheap...much cheaper than the UK

Lamb always seems expensive

Pork is not so bad AFAIK

Hard to say, what does it all cost in the UK now anyway?

Re: Meat prices

Lamb is expensive here as well, just paid £4.00 for 4 tiny chops.

Beef is not too expensive, around £4.00 for a couple of sirloin steaks perhaps.

Pork is relatively cheap, £3.00 for 4 large chops.

Can you get Ostrich meat cheaply in Canada?

Don't know what it costs, but you can get it. I drive past a couple of very cold ostriches and a few equally chilly emu on the way to town. Always strikes me as rather surreal.

Beef has gone down in pirce then in the last 6 months, i could never buy 2 sirloin steaks for £4, or pay that for pork. Where are you shopping?

I would have said that beef is cheap here, as is pork. Chicken is more expensive, but after seeing your prices who knows!

Re: Meat prices

In this weeks flyers

Boneless skinless chicken breasts 2.97 / lb 6.55/kg (1/2 price) (this is REALLY cheap, other flyers are advertising at 4.99/lb)

Pork Tenderloin 2.99/lb 6.59/kg

Top Sirloin 5.99/lb 12.21/kg

T-bone 8.99 /lb

No lamb to be found...its usually frozen when I see it anyway.

I usually go to Tesco, although Sainsburys and Asda are also quite cheap. Chicken is quite cheap but seems a bit "pumped up" compared to in some countries in Europe.

We buy a couple of fully butchered lambs from a neighbour each spring - they cost us $100 each. We just put them in the deep freeze and consume them over time. Far better value than the supermarkets.

When I first read that, i thought you'd written......" a couple of FLUFFY butchered lambs", and I gasped in horror !

As for buying lamb, well I saw some last week in Save-On-Foods and grabbed it as it was the only fresh lamb in the entire store as far as I could see. $5.30 ish for a sizeable piece, (not chops. ) Tasted.........a little different actually.

Sutherlands Feb 19th 2007 1:24 pm

Re: Meat prices

Have found the chicken to be more, pork around the same amount but it tastes so much better than the pork back home. Beef slightly cheaper.

Also it depends where you shop as well, we are slowly making the rounds of all the local shops and do see the prices jump from one shop to another.

To change the subject but keeping it on food ""BISCUITS"" cost an arm and leg at $3.60 for a pack of them, have now found the DOLLAR  shops that sell them and with 2 kids/hubby eating them, that is going to be a saving.

Ha! - no doubt they were cute and fluffy at one point. Now they're thick yummy chops, and tasty roasts.

I find lamb here tastes a little gamier than back in the UK.

That's probably it. That was the first piece of lamb weve had since we got here (Never had it very often in the UK either.)

I would say here in AB that the beef is loads cheaper than the UK. Pork....sameish, Chicken, a little more. I would agree with the poster who said to shop around. It does vary a lot. I tend to get my meat products from Save - On, as they do good value big packs.

To change the subject yet again................GREETING CARDS. I had been getting them from stores like Superstore, Wallyworld etc etc, but have now discovered the cheap and cheerful haven that is "Crazy 8's" Cards for 88c.
And not ALL crappy. I got some lovely handmade ones for that. Beats the Dollar store...............by 12c coincidentally !

One of the things I will miss in the U.K. Lamb is fresh or frozen.
I am thinking on trying Kangeroo meat, anyone tried it?

I've tried kangaroo, it wasn't very exciting, a bit dry. There's no need to miss lamb here though, we eat lamb better than once a week, usually purchased fresh and then frozen at home. We pay $300-$325 cash for a 40lb box, a bit more than we do for beef ($250). If we need it at short notice there's always fresh lamb at the St. Lawrence Market though sometimes at eyeball popping prices.

Lamb is an occasional treat for us, so sounds like you are doing better. There are restuarants I have been to in South London that sell it real cheap, but I do wonder where they got it:huh:

We usually take lamb chops camping, stick them in a plastic bag with a yogurt marinade and grill them when we get there. Magic.

Sutherlands, try No Frills for Wholewheat biscuits (Digestive) their No name ones, you can also get chocolate coated. I Think the price is $1.69 for plain ones. We get a few packets and take south with us in winter. Just as good as McVities.

Price of lamb, I was hoping to get some at a decent price when we visit UK later in the year.

Yes, I am quite the barbeque fan, Lamb, steak, burgers you name it, or is the term cookout used over there?

When it is time to cook the meat, I'm in charge:D

"Cookout" no it would be barbecue:).

We get some VERY nice lamb chops at Costco and Mrs_P says the price is very reasonable.

Hi Rich,

Does your neighbour sell whole lambs to other people or is it because you are a neighbour, we would be quite willing to travel to get good quality meat.

Thanks
Sue
