Mattresses in container
 

Hi
Has anyone had their container, which contained mattresses, inspected?
and if so what was the reaction, if any, when they saw the mattresses.

I found the following site which stated:
Used or second-hand mattresses

You cannot import used or second-hand mattresses into Canada unless you have a certificate that verifies the mattresses have been cleaned and fumigated in the country of export. A letter, or any other document that clearly demonstrates that this requirement has been met, is acceptable if it is signed by a person qualified in cleaning and fumigating.

I have read past threads and it seems that yes you can import but it should have been fumigated.
It would not make sense to allow un-fumigated imports for immigrants but not for others.
No prob if you don't get caught ;)

Don't want to face a few hundred $ expenses on fumigation!

We brought all our mattresses with us and I just vaccuumed them!

We brought all ours over too. We were never told we had to have them fumigated or anything. Our removal company just packed them up with everything else into the container, no problems.

I'll do a search later and quote the actual phrasing but goods being imported by immigrants are EXEMPT from fumigation.

here is what i posted a year or so ago

Here is Canada Border Services Agency's Memorandum D9-1-7 concerning Used Mattresses.

It specifically states that items imported under Item No. 9807.00.00 (concerning Settlers' Effects) are exempt from the requirement for fumigation.

I brought my 3 mattresses over last April in my container.....no problems whatsoever like the other posters.

I'm pretty sure goods from immigrants are exempt too. I researched the same sources as you.

Yes, I think this is correct...at the top of the OP's link it states that they following info is.....
'A guide for residents of Canada returning to Canada' so I guess that immigrants are immune. Yeh...one less thing to worry about.:thumbup:

yeah thats what the 9807.00.00 tarrif refers to , goods imported by settlers , I.E. immigrants

I have been shipping stuff to Canada for years, never had fumigation problems its usually the Aussies who get obsessive about that sort of thing

Some time ago I read about some folks having their container fumigated but I think that was due to a car which was not 'clean' (mud).

Anyway it seems no one has had a problem although most references are about "Tariff's" which are Revenue Canada issues rather then Health issues.

If there is any fumigation requirements it should be for all imports of mattresses or from specific regions as in vaccinations.
Maybe its all about special bugs who don't like immigrants hence sterile mattresses.:thumbup:

I don't understand the point you are making about health regulations.

The references given are the final authority on whether you need mattresses fumigating or not

If you are an immigrant and you are importing your own effects then you don't. Period.

Hi - when we came over we brought 1 mattress - packers were insistent that no it didnt need fumigating. Coming thru YVR at 2am I encoiuntered a v stroppy young upstart - oh no madam, cant approve your GTF list, the matress needs fumigating. Me - um, no it doesnt. . . . back n forth it went til I said, ok so what do we do now?

Oh just wait til your stuff arrives then sort it at Customs she said. Ok said a v tired and stressed me, still waiting to pick my dogs up!
not a dickie bird - stamped, styuff delivered next day ,. . . done!
Roll on 3 weeks - call from packers etc. . . .stuff is here, please go to Canada customs and get the GTF list approved. . Off I went, armed with that link above regarding immigrants effects dont need fumigating. Waited my turn, it wasnt even mentioned . . .stamped, stuff delivered next day!
