I landed last Sunday in Toronto, and when at the Customs where they ask for the goods to follow list, the officer asked me was there any mattresses on the list to which i replied yes, he then goes on to tell me they wont be coming in, I queried this asking was he sure and he says definitely.
He marked big crosses next to the mattresses on my goods to follow list and told me to give this to customs when my shipment arrives. Is this correct? I really thought it was fine, can anyone help me on this?... many thanks in advance. So began the Canadian red tape  :D |

I phoned Canada Border Services Agency at 8.05 a.m.
The CBSA officer with whom I spoke said that used mattresses that settlers import are exempt from the fumigation regulation. I asked him what the best remedy was for a settler who had been told at her port of entry that she would not be allowed to take delivery of her mattresses. He suggested that the settler in question discuss the matter with CBSA staff when she went to clear her shipment. Hope that helps. x Thanks Judy, :) I was going to go down today but hubby has the car, so you phoning has saved me a journey, I'll wait till the shipment arrives and see what happens, this has eased my worries a little.I didn't fancy going out to buy three Singles and a Double after just buying them. |

We've just had 3 quotes from 3 different removal companies and they all told me, no mattresses can go in to canada (Alberta). Arrgh!!
What about if you get them fumigated? (Not that I've heard of anyone being made to do even that!) |

Re: Mattresses
It's all just misunderstanding the rules - you've seen the tariff, it's fine to import them - let your removal people have a copy so they can update their info sheets.
(to be fair, it's not worded in an easy-to-follow way, is it? But still, it's clear that you can import your used mattress so no need to worry...) |
Re: Mattresses
Just an update to let you all know, my shipment arrived at my door yesterday MATTRESSES and all. After all that worry Customs didn't even look through it.
I did let my removal company know about the crosses on the form and he had a word with the Customs Officers, seems like the Officer I got when I landed didn't know his stuff after all. |
