Is it true that you have to get certificates of fumigation etc to import bed mattresses?

Has anyone done this, or just simply bought new ones in Canada?

i brought mine with me as its 7' long and there was no way i was leaving that behind!! nothing had to be done to it and nothing wsa mentioned by the removal company. someone else who was moving to oz told me it would have to be done too but obviously she was wrong

What exactly do prisoners make that you would buy? :confused: Car number plates?

Sure there was a tread a while ago about importing a "classic" Jenson, IIRC others had successfull imported their cherished cars from places other than the US.

my hubby is military here in canada and was based in the uk for 3 years when we met. he used to have a jag and a bmw in the uk but chickened out about bringing it home with him (a decicsion he regrets now) There were load of other guys who brought their cars back to canada with them though and they had to be over a certain age for them to do it. one guy bought a jag for £2000 and is trying to sell it here now for $16k!!!!! like thats gonna happen!!

Darn it, that means I will have to leave my license plates behind.

I don't know about other countries, but in the US they have prisoners make office supplies for the Federal government. I used to work in an EPA lab and most of our pens, envelopes, notepads, etc. were made by prisoners. I think they also make military uniform parts (ties, hats, etc., not the actual uniforms) as well.

Why would you want to import your mattress to canada? You can get really good ones over here, and the prices are dropping everyday. We just got a queen set of mattresses ( sealy would you believe ) for $399 from the brick, they have sales going on right now.

Yes, but can you get british King size in Canada? I read somewhere that you can't. This is for those who import their king size beds along with their other furniture.

You have to look very carefully at the sizes but I don't think thay match up. So if you have a lot of bedding/cherished sheets then the only place as far as I know to get 'european' size beds is through Ikea so if like us you will be living nowhere near an Ikea then you either bring your bed with you or give in and buy new. In our case I was delighted to have a new bed after years of sleeping on one I inherited from my mum.

As a point of note....don't buy ANYTHING from the Brick unless its on sale (yup guess where OUR bed came from) we didn't know just how expensive they were but to give you an example, an Ashley coffee table and two ends cost around $800 from them and we found out around $400 from a locally owned store in Saskatoon. The website is a good browse though :D

Whats the difference between UK King and Canadian King? I got a Kingsize set here for about $800, which was a good deal. If a UK Kingsize is different it will be incredably hard to find new bedding to fit here anyway.

If you have room in the container bring it with you, if you dont, then buy it again here I guess. I read somewhere you should buy a new bed / matress every 8 to 10 years anyway to prevent back problems, but that was probably written by a bed salesman:confused:

I agree about the prices at the Brick, especially with the financing "deals" factored in.

BTW King here is 76'' x 80" (thats inches to those unfamiliar with them! As you know, Canada is Bilingual...inches and millimeters:) )

I don't know what the difference in size is, but I know my friend's wife brought over king size sheets from the UK for their new US king size bed and they were way too small. She has them on their US queen size guest bed now and they don't fit exactly but they work OK. So based on that, I guess US (which is the same as Canadian) king is larger than the UK king. There is also a "California king" which I think is a bit longer than the standard king.

Curiosity got the better of me, so here is the answer to my own question. UK Kingsize is 60''x 78'' and "super king" is 72" x 78",

US Sizes are Queen (60 x 80), King (76x 80) and "California King" a whopping NBA approved 72x 84

Iaink just pipped me to the post as I was going to say that we brought over a UK King size bed and mattress (didn't know we weren't supposed to) but in Canada it appears to be classed as a Queen size, the Canadian King Size is a bit larger.

I have to say I tend to buy my bedding on visits back to the UK - it seems to be quite expensive here - especially duvet covers. I go to Asda or Primark and can pick up a duvet cover for 10GBP, a pair of pillowcases for 3GBP etc. I don't think duvets have caught on to a great extent yet - I know they sell comforters (duvets and covers all in one for those in the UK) but I found after one wash all the stuffing moved around in it - now I buy comforters and put duvet covers over them.

Definitely check the size of your bed against the beds in the Canadian catalogues.

Our UK king is now a Canadian Queen, but the mattress is actually is a tad longer and narrower.

I was told there are two versions of King size, eastern size and western size... but I don't know how true it is. As far as I can tell Canadian King size is the size of a small room!! :D
