Marry in UK or Canada?
 

Alright guys :)

Might be something on the cards if things go in that direction. Nothing certain yet so just asking casually for now.

Basically, girl is Canadian Citizen and passport holder since she moved there in 2001. She has a child born in Canada in 2003.

I am British Citizen, born in UK and British Passport holder.

If we were to get married (she would move to UK with her child), would we get married at UK registry office or in Canada?

As option to move and live in Canada later on in life would be a possibility.

You would not register the marriage in both countries would you?

makes no difference that I can see. Both countries recognize marriages that took place in the other.

Yeah but there are some hoops you have to go through in the UK if one of them is a foreign national.

Dunno if much has changed in the past 13 yrs or so, but depending on which direction you decide to go ( UK or Canada ) it will make a difference. If you are both settling in UK my advice would be to get married in UK. It is a shorter time (IMHO) to get a finacee visa and then move on to married / PR when you eventually get hitched. If you get married first, it can mean the potential for a longer time apart before entry clearance is achieved for the O/H. This is how it was for me & the missus 13 yrs ago and her moving to the UK. Things may have changed, so look carefully before you commit and see what others have to say in response. this is only my experience. Good Luck!

Two recent stories about refusing a Japanese Husband, and a Canadian wife spousal visa's in the UK. Double check everything.

Some interesting info, like it has been suggested it is good to check things out before doing anything.

Worst case would be that if you do the marriage in both countries, you could be in double the trouble!

My wife and I got married at a registry office in Manchester. We told all our relatives a few weeks later. We had our 2 best friends there as witnesses and we went for a curry and a pub crawl afterwards. I highly recommend it. Less cost and much less stress. :)

Ours was "registry" office too...or Court House as they like to say in Quebec.

My mum and a relative came over. Our party was 9. We had a nice dinner after in a private room at a restaurant.

We went down the registry route too, it was a lovely day. Me, my husband and our ten month old son. We had to comb the area outside for a couple of witnesses. A lovely day. We did it in Jersey, as the UK needed us to be resident for three weeks prior, and we couldn't do that.
