Marmite

I got myself a jar of Marmite yesterday ... 125g for $3-98 ... don't know how that compares ... made in England, so it's the "real" stuff.

The kids used to eat it on toast when they were little ... let them sniff it last night and I got a "blech!!" from both of them :(

Looks like I'll be eating it all by myself

You've just dissed some of my favorite foods!!

Eggs ... be they scrambled, fried, everything except boiled, have to be eaten with brown sauce.

Ever tried a toasted fruit bun (a hot cross bun will do) with a sausage and brown sauce ... mmmmmm, yummy :D

And also has many uses.

A good hangover preventor/cure (loads of B12). I used to have a fingerful of it before going to bed after a night on the razz and can recommend it.

And the mozzies apparently don't like B12 in the blood either.

I have to admit that is one British food that I've really come to enjoy. It was a gradual process though, starting with Twiglets about 3 years ago. On my trip back to Victoria, that is the one British food I looked for in the local shops. To Willmore - it's available in the Fairfield Thirfties if you want a truly odd culinary experience :D.

!! Eye opening moment there (for me)! I had never considered that - that the crosses had to be put on hot cross buns... by someone! The things I take for granted :) Good thing you didn't stick with it as a career as hot cross buns are usually only available around Easter in Canada (at least the west coast) so it would have been only seasonal employment for you :D.

Very intricate, complex, skilled, and bloody hot job.

Haven't really got the time to go into it. ;)

I once had a piece of marmite on toast sent to me from Germany (to England). I lived there and on my return some friends thought it would be fun to show how much they missed me!
The funny thing was that British customs opened the parcel and after putting the bits together you could see some customs officer had taken a big bite.
Bloomin cheek eh! :o

Its just so deliously savoury - I can see we are going have to smuggle it over when we go. Ohh and did someone mention mazipan that is just so fab.

I was lucky with the weather on my trip back - it was sunny (but very cold) all but one day and the day after I left, it snowed! :p If you're in desparate need of some nice weather just send me a plane ticket. :)

Try Vegemite! Bleeeuuurrrrrrrrrchhhh!! Compared to vegemite, marmite is a dream.
I always wondered what a "vegemite sandwich" was (those who grew up in the 80's know exactly the song that brought vegemite sandwiches to fame)
Then I had the unfortunate experience of having an aussie (my lurvely hubby) bring some to Canada. I tried!! I really did! But definately not my thing. I still have to fight holding my nose when I make his favorite brekky.... vegemite and cheese on toast. :p

I paid £2.18 for a 250g jar in Sainsbury's this week. We eat at least one of these every week, especially under beans on toast mmmmmm.

Have to agree about Vegemite being yukky too, but my husband, who is very strange, also likes Vecon (which is a veggie stock) on his toast! No accounting for taste eh! :p
