Re: manitoba
The flood risk areas run mainly along the Red River basin, and some tributaries off it.
Some maps etc. can be found here:- http://www.gov.mb.ca/waterstewardshi...info/maps.html Winnipeg its self is fairly safe from flooding due to the "Flood way" which diverts water around the City, I believe it is safe now up to a "700 Year Flood" the 97 flood was a "200 Year Flood" and the last one that flooded the City in 1950 was a "100 Year Flood" and it was that which prompted the building of the flood way. If you travel in the South flood plain area you will see that most homes are either built high or surrounded by a dike. It's one of several problems of building a city on the location of a pre-historic sea bed. |

Re: manitoba
We drove to Minnesota through the Red River valley the Easter before last and it was water as far as you could see. The US roads seemed higher and the only detour we had to take was on the Canada side. That much water would have been headline news in Europe, but it's just what happens there, no-one was bothered.
But as the others have said, it doesn't really affect most of Winnipeg and I definitely wouldn't rule out moving there because of it. More info about the ditch that protects the city here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_Floodway |
