Mac Usage in Canada

Hi, I know that there are a couple of Mac users on Biiink and Wilmore come to mind, I was just wondering if any body knew if Mac's are popular in Canada. I have taken the plunge and bought one and I'm having a real blast with it.

Apparently Apple has about 8% of the North American sales in computers. However the numbers keep changing, so who really knows for sure.

One thing I am sure about though. I own a powerbook that is about 4 months old and I love it. I have been on both a PC and Mac and I would never return to a PC. Apple care is second to none when you have a problem.

I have absolutely NO problem in purchasing a new Mac or any of the software that is required and I live in a small city!

The only disadvantage that I can think of is that Mac users pay about 10% more for their upgrade software than PC users (at least in Victoria)!

Mac is the only way to go!

In Glasgow I could only buy from 2 locations, here there are 4. I do miss the free 2yr John Lewis guarantee (always bought from them for that reason), but I don't miss the silly sending your computer to Dublin by FedEx for repairs under warranty malarkey - here you just take it to your nearest authorised repair centre, far more convenient.

I think the software selection on the "high street" is better here than in the UK (only ever saw it in John Lewis) but for unusual stuff it's still best to do mail order.

When speaking to tech support you don't seem to get the horrified "What? You use a what?" that I've had in the UK, all the people I've spoken to are Mac fluent which is nice :)

And getting ahead of myself, I've also browsed a few schools for Biiiiink Jr and have seen quite a few that use Mac. Until he earns the money to buy his own OS he'll have no choice in the matter anyway, muhahaha :D :D :D

So, what Mac did you get?

It is a G5 desk top with dual 1.8GHz CPU, 1G Ram, 80G hard drive for £880, a nice 20inch Apple Cinima screen for £400 all off eBay, since upgraded with an additional 2GB ram for about £100 and added a little extra disk, upped the internal from 1 x 80GB to 2 x 300GB, also added bluetooth and WiFi.

It is such a nice system, very stable and fun to use so far. :D

The only problem I'm having is the spell checker on BE isn't work any more, but I can live with my bad spelling

That's a nice package you have there....so to speak! I've been a Mac user for about 3 years now. I finally took my brothers advice to take the plunge and have never looked back or at another PC thankfully. He has been an apple almost since its birth. Here in Windsor there are a couple of Apple resellers and they all offer sales and servicing. I am a photographer and my powerbook goes everywhere with me...much to my wife's annoyance! I guess its a Mac thing. Im still using Panther and I'm just wondering if I should upgrade to Tiger or wait till Leopard appears later in the year. At least Mac OS whatever it is stable and more or less glitch and virus free.

Simon.

I upgraded to Tiger but it seems to have some difficult operating properly with firefox, but it works fine with camino or safari. If you are getting it for free, then I would upgrade, otherwise save yourself $159.00 and wait for Leopard.

Nice! If you're desperate for the spell checker, it works in Firefox :) (just tested it with v1.5)

Edit: didn't see your post Willmore - I don't use Firefox but Mr B does, he hasn't got any probs with it, at least none he's admitting to. He hates Safari and won't touch it, I keep removing his Firefox from the dock :D

You don't need the spellchecker if you use Safari.

Just go to Edit => Spelling whenever your cursor is in a text box.

So far I am using Safari, I have downloaded Firefox just not installed as yet. I did use Firefiox on my PC and loved the tabbed brousing which I am geting in Safari so not in much of a rush to change.

The OS is Tiger, I think, 10.4.5

I find firefox can be really slow. I have found safari excellent and camino (if you want a no frills browser is the best of the bunch (in my humble opinion).

I think I'll wait for Leopard, I'm using Safari and its working very well. Which Powerbook do you use? Are you ever so slightly PO'd that you didnt get the MacBook Pro? I wonder when or if a 17" will ever surface?

I have the 15" powerbook G4 and I am very very happy with it. By the time Im ready for a new Mac the prices may go down a bit. No regrets with my powerbook!
