+1. My company is now extremely reluctant to apply for LMIAs but has recently moved people over on ICT with little hassle.

Surprised no one has mentioned LinkedIn yet - that's pretty essential for networking in the IT industry these days.

I imagine that's because they want to pay as little as possible! :)
When you state your salary expectations they can decide if you're too expensive. Happens in the UK in private industry as well.

My experience is that they will state at the interview what the salary is and you make sure you say you would be more comfortable with more money than that and there's a good chance you will get it (as long as you don't ask for an outrageous amount). Vacation time is sometimes negotiable too, if it's a small company.
