Default Listing UK degree on a Canadian CV?

I will be moving to Nova Scotia shortly, and have just obtained a 1st Class Honours Degree here in the UK.

I don't think Canadian employers would know what this is, would they? As It was 1st Class, I want some way of listing this so that they understand I achieved the highest grade possible (might give me an edge over other candidates!).

How should I list it on my CV?

I just listed mine as a BSc (Hons) in ........... (probably cos I got a Douglas )

Mind you the MSc trumped that anyway.

Do you have % grades too? They would understand that.

Me too. Mine's a Desmond, but still a Bsc(Hons).

Hey James,

Congratulations on your degree. I got a high Trevor (such weird slang!) from Durham and to be honest employers here don't seem to really care unless it's in a specific field (and sometimes not even then). What was your degree in? I think if you just put your degree with honours that's the best you can do. Unless you got a super high 1st Class I just don't think they pay any attention.

Congratulations Jameswales on your first class honours. You should consider postgraduate studies.

Mines a Damien and I simply list it as a Bsc(Hons) - I have met people who know what a 1st is (tend to be academically inclined) but generally the Bsc(Hons) is more broadly understood.

Cheers - Steve

Convert it to Grade Point Average, thats the format they use here, though it is often seen as inappropriate to put that on your Resume. Like others said, just having the degree is enough here.

Percentages in UK degree courses (at least in day - graduated in '93) bore no relation to North American degree percentages, and even less relation to GPAs.

I would simply state "1st Class Honours (equivalent to Suma Cum Laude)".

Make sure of course that the Latin designation is the right equivalent! I believe the levels are;
Cum Laude
Magna Cum Laude
Suma Cum Laude.

PS. I'm not sure we had a slang phrase for a 2:1 back then. A 1st was a Geoff, a 2:2 was a Desmond (or a drinking man's Geoff) and a 3rd was a Douglas.

I've got one and I just call it that. I've never thought about it, and nobody has ever asked, so I don't think it will make the slightest bit of difference.

Mine's an Invisible Man.

Do they have the Dean's List for degrees as well as college stuff? If every grade you get for a semester is over 80% you get a letter from the Dean and are on the Dean's list. People put that on their resumes under Accolades and Awards.

While we are all boasting I had a Dean's letter for every semester on my 2 year college diploma.
