Light Rail Transprot in Canada
 

Hi,

Can anyone advise me of Light Rail companies operating in Canada, looking at Calgary/Edmonton BC areas, i have found Calgary Transit, is this the only company. Any links would be greatly appreciated, i have done a search but it comes up with allsorts of stuff, so i thought i would ask people living there becasue you will obviously know.

Both Calgary and Edmonton LRT's are owned and operated as part of the transit system by the respective cities, they are not private companies.

Can't answer for the Vancouver system but would guess it is the same.

Here's the Vancouver site. http://www.translink.bc.ca/default.asp

It includes bus, Skytrain, Seabus and West Coast Express services.

Thank you everyone, thats really great, we are looking for possible job opportunities in this field as we both have long backgrounds in light rail, so the links provided have been really useful.

theres talk abut Victoria getting it too


Outside of the places mentioned

Ottawa and Toronto have LRT systems

- possibly in future
Mississauga
Kitchener / Waterloo

but don't hold your breath on these

Toronto's is the most extensive one

Do you drive LRT things or are you more 'behind the scenes'???

Only asking as Calgary Transit just had a campaign in the Uk to recruit bus (and ultimately I would imagine ) LRT drivers

Hubby can drive he is currently an ops controller in the control centre dealing with signalling routes all other things like that, i am behind scenes not anything technical unfortunately, :thumbup:

Thanks Flossie and Jim, just had a look at their web page, hubby will apply for transit job, dont know how far he will get as it asks for Alberta Class driving license/category but will give it a try anyway, hubby loves Canada, he was there whilst in the Army, so will give it a shot thanks for the tip x

Also, might be worth keeping an eye on City of Calgary job pages although in the past they have been fairly strict with qualifications (not sure if this is changing with the international recruitment though).

I have heard of friends of colleagues who got jobs with Translink in BC in the transport planning field so perhaps they might be a good one to take a close look at.

Aw thanks so much, have applied on Hubby's behalf he said i could i did ask him first lol, sent off the application via email all filled out and attached CV, wrote them a nice letter saying that he didnt hold the Alberta Class 5 Drivers license but would hope that they would look favourably on the 15 years experience in Light Rail/Public Transport, he has been witht he same company for over 15 years and done all manner of jobs within the system and in 2 years he has had 1 day off sick, he loves his job, wish i felt the same about mine lol,

thanks again i really appreciate. Will keep you posted if we hear anything, just got to try and find something for me now, dont have formal qualifications only a Management Certificate, but its not one thats recognised worldwide only in UK (:()

Victoria are currently looking at BRT (bus) andnot LRT as far as I know

In Vancouver there is SkyTrain currently running.

Canada Line is due to open fall 2009

Evergreen Line a bit later
