Agreed. From I'll Take The Train (loosely): During WW2 German prisoners of war were being shipped across the country by train to camps in southern Alberta, and every time there was an on-coming or overtaking train of war material it got priority so the pow's would be stuck in sidings regularly, making for a long trip. When they crossed the prairies, a railway man who understood German heard them discussing the country they were going through. Some of the prisoners were convinced they were being purposely misled as to their destination by the train being backed up at night and rolling past the same fields the next day.
Because of it's size and because there are few other large citys Winnipeg has a significant crime sheet, but statistics can be misleading.

Why on earth would you choose Winnipeg? Like all the prairie towns, its ugly, cold and dull. If you have to move to Canada why not try Vancouver? They have good snowboarding close and the summers are very pleasant.

I havent been on the forum for a while, but I see folks are still giving the 'peg a hard time.

It is what it is, family friendly, a reasonable spread of facilities. reasonably affordable.

I am not sure you will get much of a kick out of the local snowboarding, yes there are a couple of small areas a couple of hours drive away, but for anything extensive you need to jump on a plane - so in that sense similar to heading to europe from UK.

The other guys have nailed the climate, personally I find the winter in the UK tougher to deal with

If you're seeking mountainous topography in Manitoba, you're in for a disappointment. Here's the relief map. Note the scale, too.

A Google images search for "Manitoba landscape" or "Winnipeg scenery" will also give you a sense of where you'd be moving to. Here, for example, is a photo gallery of Winnipeg in late January: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=203758

Note, I like Winnipeg, but for completely different reasons that you're seeking.

Ah, but that map's from 2002. Everything's gone up since then.
