Life expectancy falls

Life expectancy in New Brunswick drops by 1.14 years
(likely paywalled but probably reported elsewhere)

Life expectancy in New Brunswick dropped by a dramatic 1.14 years in 2022 as COVID-19 deaths were the highest on record since the beginning of the pandemic, pulling down the average age New Brunswickers are expected to live to, according to newly released Statistics Canada data.
It’s the largest single drop recorded across the country.
The average New Brunswicker is now expected to live to 79.76 years old.

It’s 77.77 years for New Brunswick men and 81.80 for women, with the life expectancy of both sexes dropping by more than an entire year over a 12-month span.
My 85 year old MIL is still going strong...but she's from Quebec.

In this province they are doing everything they can to say it's done. Or at least the government is.

The Health organisations are still reporting cases in hospital/ICU and deaths and their numbers have been consistent throughout.

But the government are now not even counting Covid deaths unless they happen in hospital and it's very hard to even get test kits. The Chief Medical Officer has been silenced and is on her way out.

The government has also withdrawn charges against the anti-vaxxer, anti measures people too, presumably because it would keep covid in the news.

Same as over here mate. As soon as the WHO downgraded it the UK more or less stopped with it. If you want a test now you have to go to a pharmacy and buy one, can still go to work and do every day duties with Covid, so pointless even buying a test to be honest.

Perhaps it should be but nobody has any trust in the authorities to get it right anymore. I'm in the Netherlands, and almost half our company is off sick with Covid, but nobody talks about it. Nobody keeps tests in the house anymore. Nobody wears masks on public transport anymore but there's always several ar$eholes who will cough and splutter over everyone else. Nobody keeps track of the strains. It's scary because even if the scientists say 'Hey, this strain has evolved and it's looking pretty lethal to the very old/very young/chronically ill/everyone-even-bootcamp-level-fanatics', will anyone ever care again? Apathy/news fatigue may yet kill us off.

It's very noticeable now that people cough and splutter all the time in a way that would have been socially unacceptable before covid. It's usual for people to be visibly ill now.

Well you can but NHS advice is to stay at home for 5 days and avoid immunocompromised people for 10 days.
