Licensing to Practice in Canada
 

Hello All,

I need real advice please. Following the approval of my PR, I thought I should start some of the processes of getting my qualifications recognized in Canada before I eventually land sometime in December 09/January 10. I really need to start sorting out my qualifications so that I can get a job easily and quickly after I land in Canada.

I am a geologist (with both BSc and MSc) with four years work experience in a consulting firm and was wondering if there is any organization within Canada that can assess my qualifications and issue me with a license that would be recognize by all the three provinces above. I know each province has its own licensing or professional organization but I don't think I can afford licensing by each province. Is there a way around this.

Any view or advice would be highly welcome.

Generally professional licensing are handles by the provincial PEng bodies alone, although provinces recognise other provinces licencess for easy movement around the country.

In your case I would say the Alberta APPEGA is probably the one to aim for, assuming you want to work in the energy sector.

Bare in mind that the qualification assesment that CIC do is not necessarily remotely related to the Provincial PEng assement, and that APPEGA may require some licenscing assesments and exams, as well as a period of practice under a local PEng anyway. You also have to be resident here before you can start the process as I recall, unless they have recently changed that.

Ontario (PEO) has introduced a temporary license for suitable experiences overseas candidates to make getting employment easier, but you still need to serve time here before they will issue you a full PEng license. Anyway, The PEng and provincial websites spell out the process pretty clearly.
