Default Landing trip Nova Scotia

Hi all,

Finally our time to complete our landing process has arrived! We'll be landing in Nova Scotia end of Sept. This will be our first time to NS and only a short landing as we both need to return to the UK, finish our jobs before officially moving over Jun 2017. We're very excited and looking forward to the new adventure.

So, this 10 days trip will be to check out all the areas, ideally we'd like to view some properties, either rental or to buy but unsure if anyone will bother to show us around as we're not moving just yet?! Does anyone have realtor that can recommend?

I guess it is difficult to get an idea where we'd like to based ourselves as it all depends on jobs? My husband will be finishing his career as Army officer here and wants to apply for training with the Police force out there, does anyone has similar experiences to share? Initially training will be at PEI so I'll most likely to be on my own for that time, so unsure where I should based? We're just us and 2 dogs so pretty flexible.

Really appreciate any tips from you all based in NS, anything need doing during our short landing? I can't think of any apart from opening bank accounts, getting Medical / Security cards done and getting to know the area.

I think until you decide where in NS you want to live you may want to wait before looking for realtors.

I came over in Feb 2008 house hunting and then we moved over 31st Mar and signed for house on 1st April. Buying certainly was a quick process compared to the UK

The Halifax Regional Police are not accepting any new recruits at the present time, and are only looking at experienced officers for June 2017. There are, of course, other forces in NS, but Halifax is probably the largest. Also, getting your medical cards might have to wait until you are here permanently, as there is a limited amount of time that you are allowed to be away from NS; and you are not entitled to MSI for the first two months in Nova Scotia. The application also needs to be signed by a full-time resident of NS (bit of a rigamorale, to be honest). And good luck finding a GP.

Usually in NS you are covered from day 1 on arriving permanent and you use application form and provide proof of residency/immigration

MSI Frequently Asked Questions | novascotia.ca

Finding a gp will be difficult but there are walk in clinics.

Suggest searching for areas that need police officers or you could look at rcmp

RCMP requires that you be a Canadian Citizen OR (just announced) a Permanent Resident of at least 10 years standing in country

Municipal forces have different regulations as to the status of their members. The regulations for each force needs to be checked before even thinking of applying.

This is from the Halifax Police site .........

ExperiencedOfficerRecruitment

Experienced Police Officers

Applications for the 2016/17 selection process will be accepted from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.
We will be accepting applications from experienced police officers who are interested in participating in our annual recruitment process.
We don't practice a lateral entry process. Successful candidates will not retain their previous rank, compensation or seniority.
Note: According to Halifax Regional Police policy and Nova Scotia Department of Justice Guideline, an experienced police officer refers to:
  • Current serving police officers in Canada
  • Canadian Military Police (regular service) with Qualifications Level 5
  • Applicants who successfully completed an approved Police Recruiting Training Program from a Nova Scotia recognized training program within the last 24 months or less
  • Applicants who successfully completed an approved Police Recruiting Training Program from a Nova Scotia recognized training program and have been gainfully employees with recognized Canadian police agency within the last 24 months or less.

They are not currently recruiting new officers (cadets) ... butt he requirments for that program include ............

following minimum requirements:
  • Must be 19 years of age by application deadline
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Grade 12 education with academic courses in English and Math, or GED and a minimum of two-years life experience which may include employment, education, training or other productive organizational experience that demonstrates a significant contribution to society
  • No criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted and no adult criminal charges pending
  • Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license or equivalent from another Canadian province

I do assume that you have checked out all these requirements very carefully, and know that your husband is eligible to join the police force?

Thanks for the heads up re: police recruitment!

Yes, it's the municipal forces he's aiming for he ticked all the requirements BUT they're not recruiting new cadets though like u mentioned...so may have to rethink this...that's always Canadian Army but worst scenario as he's just finished army career in the UK and fancy a change!

Just hope they'll be recruiting again soon!

Oh, reading the info again, he is planning to join a police recruitment training course though. This means after that he's qualify to apply as an experienced officers route?! I think that course alone cost $30,000 and no gurantee of employment after...worth considering if that's all worthwhile then.

no, I don't think you have a guarantee of employment after completing the course ......... but you should check that out.

You also need to check out how many municipal forces there are in NS ............ a lot of the policing is done by the RCMP. It is cheaper for smaller communities to pay the RCMP to do the policing than it is for them to form their own police force and set up all the necessary departments.

The Halifax police force is actually the Metro Halifax force, and they police several of the cities now included in Metro ......... but other communities included in Metro apparently pay for RCMP policing rather than for the Metro force

Try looking on this site for names and addresses of police forces in NS

Thanks, Hubby is aware of this which is why we've to think hard. His 1st choice is Vancouver but we're put off by the costs of property as we won't be able to keep the lifestyle we have now with it being so expensive while NS won't be the same at all, it'll be more affordable.

Thanks for the info and I think all will become clearer when we land.
