Have you seen the wiki on this subject? Lots of suggestions there:

I paid about $CAD600 with a $CAD1000 excess (I really only wanted 'disaster' cover, not for the odd sniffle etc.)

Just found cost for 90 days cover.

66 year old male was $368

61 year old female was $331

All Canadian dollars which I thought was good

you can pay more, it just depends on how much cover you want.

Hey Fivesting,

Congrats! I did a soft landing in December, but back in UK for now.
May I just ask about driving licence - the canadian website that explains everything is not available outside Canada..
What exactly paperwork did you need to get it exchanged? And which one did you get - full one or? My issues is, I have a UK licence from like 2013 but I have never really driven here apart from my driving lessons. Dont have a car and only rent when I travel .. which means I dont have and insurance records or anything else..
So was wondering if you could tell me, what exactly did they ask for?

Thanks a lot in advance!!

They are all available outside Canada, but which province are you moving to? Requirements will vary depending on that as they each have different rules.

thanks! i have seen this one... now i remember, its the "drivetest ca" website that won't open if you are outside canada...
Anyhow, what i wasn't sure about is that they stipulate "bring any original supporting documents that show proof of your driving experience" - what kind of paperwork would this be if coming from the UK? Also, like I have mentioned previously, I haven't really driven or owned a car here.. only renting on holidays abroad.. it's just from the OP account of events it seemed, he just had his UK licence and it was sufficient for exchange?

Thank you!!

I had my current UK plastic photo card license which showed that my initial test was 46 years ago so no problem with driving experience.

I do not know what you will need, but if you have any proof of rentals etc I would take them along.

i had to fill in a simple form, give up my UK license and do a very simple eye test. The test was conducted with both eyes open to read some numbers and a peripheral vision check. After a picture was taken, I handed over 90 dollars and was given a paper license until my card arrived.

The waiting in triage to check your documents and get a number was the longest time. Get there early

However, their premiums will be adjusted for the first three years of driving in B.C. due to the increased risks associated with driving in a new area."
It doesn't say which way they will be adjusted but I can guess! The page is https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensin...r-country.aspx

I think that might be because the health card doesn't have, what should be, current address information on it, whereas the drivers licence does.
