landing in different province

Hi

My OH has a visa and has to take up PR by Jan 09, he has night mare work commitments and was hoping to land in Toronto even though we will reside in Calgary once we all go out next year, just to save time and money. Does anyone know if this will cause a problem. He is already going on his own (even though I sponsored him!) so we don't want to cause too many probs!

Thanks for any pointers.

No, my (also sponsored) OH said Alberta on the forms, actually landed in Ontario, and went straight to live in Manitoba ;) Unless Quebec is involved, nobody cares, it's just for their stats.

Doesn't make any difference, if its a PR visa you can land anywhere.

We Landed in Toronto in April becuase we wanted the shorter flight, as our two children are under 3. We are moving to Calgary on the 3th October. I have already been out to Calgary twice since I landed on work and research trips and there is no Issue with Moving to somewhere different from where you Landed.

Oh that's good, so if we're successful with our emigration plans (for MB) we can land in Toronto and get an internal to Winnipeg (may well be cheaper using cheap (Canadian Affair) airline to get to Toronto than paying Air Canada direct to the Peg, now that Zoom's gone bust )

Good to know

PS - How do they make sure you go where you're supposed to though? (ie you're nominated by MB so have to live there but how do they check this?).

If you're entering on PNP, the immigration officer at your port of entry will almost certainly ask you about your plans for proceeding to the province that nominated you.

You could show him/her your air tickets, which will have another leg from Toronto to Winnipeg (for example). You also could show him the address on your Goods To Follow form. (If you don't yet have a residential address, you'll probably provide the Winnipeg address of your shipping company on your GTF form.)

Thanks, just wanted to make sure nothing holds us up when we finally get there. Always good to be prepared :) We're not shipping anything so will have to show air tickets and maybe our friend's address there / the address of the b&b we'll be staying in for the first week or so till we find somewhere more permanent.

Thanks again, Anita

Even if you're not shipping anything, you still have to complete Form B4 Personal Effects Accounting Document at your port of entry (or else have it completed in advance and ready to hand to the immigration / customs officer who processes you at your Canadian port of entry). Although you will not have goods to follow, you will have goods accompanying (the clothes in your suitcases).

Under the heading of Which Forms To Use, the Wiki article called Goods To Follow states:

  • Form B4 E, Personal Effects Accounting Document is the mandatory cover sheet for your list of goods accompanying as well as your list of goods to follow.
  • Please note that the empty version of Form B4 E, Personal Effects Account Document is the same, whether it's to be used for the goods that accompany you to Canada and for the goods that will follow later.
  • If you have both goods accompanying and goods to follow, you will need two copies of Form B4 E, Personal Effects Account Document.
  • About half way down Form B4 E, there are boxes that you check to indicate whether or not the goods will follow later.
  • For the form that will act as the cover sheet for your Goods To Follow list, you should tick the Yes box next to Goods To Follow.
  • For the form that will act as the cover sheet for your goods accompanying list (that is, for the goods that accompany you at your Canadian port of entry), you should tick the No box next to Goods To Follow.

Also be aware that, if you lodge a list of Goods To Follow, you do not have to import the goods on that list. However, if you do not lodge a list of Goods To Follow and you later change your mind and decide to import some of your belongings to Canada, you will be out of luck. If you have not lodged a list of Goods To Follow, you will not be allowed to import those items free of duty and taxes in the future.

No doubt you've thought about this already, but I just wanted to be absolutely sure you understood the implications of not submitting a list of Goods To Follow.

Wow I didn't know that! Thanks Judy, we'll definitely submit the form then as we'll probably get sentimental nearer the time and decided to take some photos and other personal effects with us. It's too early to start thinking about it as we haven't even got PR yet but it's good to have the heads up on this now so I can add it to my emigration notes (doc I'm compiling as I go along, with useful info on emigrating, finance, logistics, housing, etc).

Cheers, Anita
