Kippers

I was a frequent purchaser of frozen kippers at Loblaws, but they are no longer carrying them (at least not in Port Perry or Oshawa). Does anyone know where they can be found? I did buy two cans of kippers but haven"t tried them yet - has anyone tried them? - If so, how do they compare to frozen?

I can't help you with a specific location as I don't live (thank God) in Ontario but I'd suggest you try a proper fishmongers, they bound to have them. We have two local ones here and they both stock frozen Scottish kippers plus they also have smoked mackerel. They cost four dollars per pack and you get four whole kippers per pack. Which is quite expensive so I only eat them occasionally but they do brighten up a Sunday morning breakfast or an early teatime. I'd prefer to have English ones to be honest as they're a lot more tasty but what can you do when you live so far from the source?

Racist. You probably really prefer UKIP-pers. ;)

Actually its estimated that there will be an exceedingly large pink salmon run this year so I’m inclined to kipper and then freeze a lot of them. That way I’ll have lots throughout the year and I’ll save money in the process.

Long ago, before I realised that people take being British seriously, I had a "British Party". People turned up with party sevens and Marmite the like and one, person, an absolute star, walked in with kippers. He was Nigerian and later moved on from Toronto to Philadelphia. I've no idea where he got the kippers nor if he can get them in Philadelphia but, for one shining moment, this incredible tall man made me see Britain in terms of smoked fish. I don't know that one can hope for more from one's guests.
