We are thinking of moving to Kamloops or Nelson. Do you know what these places are like to get a basic job for a 40 years old? We lived in Calgary and Vancouver but now would like to try some place smaller. Could you offer any suggestions? Properties, schools, climate, local politics, work? :o Appreciate any advise

Hi Gezza,
I am 40 myself. There are lots of jobs here. You can also live just 10 minutes from the city center and be only a few minutes from great river walks/fishing and golf courses and walking/cycling areas in the country.

I have been renting 15 minute drive from the City center and every one wants to know why I live so far out of town. We are now moving closer and still only a 5 minute walk from the Lac Le Bois Country park.

Mention my name (Paul Archer) and that you contacted me on the British ExPat site and they will fall over backwards to help. I am currently working with this group to improve the experience that British immigrants get when re-locating here. They heard about me from various people I have been talking to in Town and tracked me down to find out what my experience was and why I told everyone that I had firmly planned to move to Kamloops and had not just come because that is where I found employment. People here find it hard to believe that I really came for all the out door living/activities and not just for a job. They also have the perfect weather for all this living.

or

PM me and I will provide further highly biased information about the city I love. :D

Sorry but I am very biased and very proud of where I chose to live and very pleased that I did find employment here so my life style change will happen just as I planned.

Gezza, your not by any chance a serviceman are you? The magic 40 seems to be when all the serviceman leave and start to get their pensions hence the need for a basic job rather than a high flying one. :)

I'm hoping to do the same and we are also looking at Kamloops.

I can highly recommend it here.

No I am not a Service Man. And I could be persuaded to accept a high flying job in Kamloops! No seriously. We lived in Calgary and Vancouver for a few years. Now back in U.K. Kamloops sounds great. I was hoping for at least some factory work to save me being the cleaner. I am a telecom Engineer.
How about you?

Re: Kamloops

With the skills you mentioned in the PM I can garuntee you can do better than factory work.

Its a cover story that we don't have jobs here - we really have more jobs than people to fill them.

I'm currently and aircraft engineer in the Royal Navy. I've been doing the same job for 23 years and my pensions due in 10 months. The problem seems to be that because it's the only thing i've done, and my qualifications don't convert in Canada, that I have no experience doing anything else. Mind you, as a serviceman you seem to multi task all the time anyway. From man-managing to fixing black boxes to health and safety to QA. But I have no specific qualifications to back it up. I fancy a complete change but don't really know what to or how to go about it. I dont want to earn loads of money but dont really want to work for minimum wage. That said, I would if I had to. you see the dilemma. We are in the good position of having no mortgage and with the pension, a small income before we start. However its a massive leap to give up what you've been doing for 23 years and what you could keep doing for the next 10 for the big unknown. Mind you, the majority of people on here must be feeling like this!
