Is it just me......

.......or does anyone else have this problem? Why is it when you try to get hold of any sort of 'tradesman' (in NS at least, not sure about Canada as a whole) you have to call them at least three times, as they never return your messages and never call back when they say they will? :frown: and then, more often than not they don't turn up anyway!

Have you seen Mike Holmes on the telly? Apparently he's the only tradesman in Canada who does a decent job. The other's are all cowboys.

You need to only use guys called Tony, every contractor I hired in Toronto was called called Tony and they all showed up as planned.;)

According to him, there's no tradesmen in Canada that are even worth considering. They all turn up late, do shoddy work and basically rip you off. Now I live in a condo so this is my only experience with this type of stuff, so take it as you may.

There's also this older guy with long grey hair with an annoying pixie type assistant from Yeovil that do building work. Though all he does is moan about how he's doing everyone a favour but himself. I think the little British guy might do a bit up hill gardening, unless it's just a west country thing.

I see you are "HGTV positive"

Mike Holmes thinks that because he has made it his business to clean up after the bad contractors, so naturally he never sees the good ones (other than the many he hires as subs of course)

Weve had mixed experiences, some get right back, some dont. Get word of mouth recomendations from the locals...the only time we didnt we had a lousy job done (gutters), but the guys we got for the roof and windows were great.

The "West Country Pixie" now has another show where he, with a partner (in crime/possibly life), do a fake bad taste reno of someones home, film the shock horror and then do a proper job. Leastways I think thats the plot but I've never had the intestinal fortitude to watch it all.

He's branched off so to speak. I don't blame you, it sounds too hideous to watch, even for ridicule.

Back on topic.....

The state of the local housing/reno market has a lot to do with the availability/quality of contractors. With both booming in St John's over the past several years, we've had challenges in getting people in. The kitchen people were the worst - nice kitchen cabinets, well built and reasonably finished but installation was a nightmare. They had one fitter and thought it was entirely acceptable to start a job, not install enough of the kitchen to be functional and then bugger off to do the same to some other poor soul. It took a month and a lot of 'full and frank' discussions with the company to get it all completed. I noted recently that they went bust, so you reap what you sow.

Similar story with the fencing contractors we currently have engaged. They came this week - two months after quoting, but thats fine - installed the posts but now have buggered off to another job before doing the chainlinky bit. It beggars belief as to why contractors believe that everyone will be happy if you at least start their job. I'd rather they tell me - 'it'll be another two weeks before we start, but we will start and finish the job in one hit.'

I watched one episode. I thought it took "crap" to a whole new level.

Sorry about that.

Anyway, the only experience I've had with tradesmen other than on TV, is having someone to fix the dishwasher and an electrician to install a dinning room light.
The first one was a Vietnamese man, who took one look, muttered something about a new motor and didn't come back for two months. I'd have just bought a new one if I'd known it be this much trouble.

The light fixture man was very good, apart from insisting to talk about his great uncle Ray, who apparently worked in Chatham docks. That's an hour I won't get back.
