Just joined

Hi all,
just joined this great site, have been reading for a while now. Wife and I (plus 2 kids9-7) have been thinking about emigrating for about 12 months now. My brother & sister in law have be in the process for about 12 months and have persuaded us to join them in Calgery. I am just a bit worried how long it can take? I am 41 and my wife is 38 this year, so if it takes 4 years, will I be to old?
If anybody has any advice or information (websites, books, forums) also about the process of immigration, we would be very grateful, thanks!
I will start opening some threads, and hope you kind people will come forward with some helpfull advice.
many thanks to all,
Carl:D

OK, I may be giving secrets away. BUT assuming you come via the skilled worker route (as opposed to WP or PNP), you will be younger than my friends in another NW community when they arrived (and only slightly older than a lot us ........ Hi Eddie and Paul.;) ............)

Go ferit lad best move you can EVER make.

Hi Butch,
We have thought about going down this road. I have passed my Basic Plumbing certificate and my wife is a trained teachers assistant. When we asked about how many points we would have, the site we went with said my wife would have a better chance to get in?

Oh just a ask, is there any where on this forum to find out what all the abbreviations are please? Bit confussed.
thanks again,

Best way to find out about abbreviations is to use the search function in the pink toolbar (enter abbreviations ;) )

Hi

We've been in the queue to emigrate since 2004, but we only found this site recently - so we feel new too.
We're both 45, and the good thing is that you are 'processed' on the basis of the age you are when you applied - so we will always be 43! So you should be okay.
For info on abbreviations etc try the MUCH MORE magazine which you can sign up for free. This is the latest version. http://www.escapemate.co.uk/muchmor/MMFeb07Sgl.pdf

If you need any help and you want to pick our brains, let me know. We went for our medicals a couple of weeks back, so we're hoping to be on our way pretty soon.

Good luck

Hello and welcome. Only been a member for a couple of days myself.
I'm trying to get into Nova Scotia under the Nominee Programme (don't know if that makes a difference) but I will be 46 in March and still waiting!
You'll like it on here, lots of friends, lots of info and a few nutters!!! Overall a good mix.

Don't worry about age. It doesn't go on resumes, although it can easily be worked out by the dates of education and employment, etc. My OH (aged 50, way older than me ;) )was offered the job at his interview in NS last September. It was weeks later before they asked for his DOB. :D Years of experience can count for a lot!

Re: Just joined

Hi, I'd say your ages are possibly the least of your problems as you'll get maximum points between 29-49.

If you are thinking of the skilled workers route, go to the CIC site http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.html and do the online assessment to see which of you has the most points as principal applicant. However, they score highly for things like level of education, ie degrees and such. (And if you only have GCSE french for instance don't count on getting any points for French language ability!) ...... and 10 points for pre-arranged employment, which can be hard to secure! You need 67 points or more, currently.

If you are able to get a job and come on a temporary work permit to start with that can be quickest route, ...... and if you are accepted under a Provincial Nominee Programme(PNP), you get permanent residency and don't have to worry about points at all.
