Just announced - fracking banned in Nova Scotia
Following the intensive study resulting in the Wheeler Report, (Dr David Wheeler of UK) Nova Scotia Minister Andrew Younger has just announced fracking is to be banned in the Fall Legislature.

Yup! We have fracking here in the quake zone.

I don't know much about fracking, actually probably nothing... Does this mean no new off shore drilling will be possible then?

As this post has nothing to do with immigration I have moved it to the main Canada forum.

I'm glad it doesn't mean no offshore drilling as there are some big plans off the coast of south west NS that could be great for the province

It pisses off people who knit their own muesli.

My Dad was an engineer for natural gas and petroleum. I remember them digging around in all sorts of places all over the world... hmm hope he wasn't involved

Re: Just announced - fracking banned in Nova Scotia
There are over 5 million liters of fracking waste stored in lagoons at Debert, NS which the frackers wanted to dump in the municipal sewer system. The Province and the Municipality stopped them and now it has to be trucked to NB, from whence it came, where they seem OK with disposing of it.
I do not " knit my own muesli" by the way.

A good party trick, though
This fracking thing, along with other arguments involving the extractive industries, racks me off a bit. People seem happy to reap the benefits (like cheaper natural gas), provided it goes on somewhere else. NIMBYism.
I quite liked a bumper sticker I picked from the Alberta government booth at a trade show a few years ago.
"Ban mining. Let the bastards freeze in the dark."
Perhaps the breast-beaters should check to see if they own anything made from gold, silver or platinum. Like, perhaps, their bling. There are some seriously nasty chemicals involved there. They don't cause earthquakes but they can completely destroy a river in minutes.

And of course the batteries in cars like the Prius.
All they really give you is sense of warm fuzzyness as opposed to actually doing any good.
But at least it saves you from having to knit your muesli
