Jogging in Canada
Hi there just a random thing. I have just started jogging. Gonna try to do it one a week only. Hope to continue when I move over there. Whats jooging like there do many people do it? Any advice for me. Today was my 1st jog and after 15mins of jogging I was really tired. then walked for bit then jogged for bit. How many weeks or months of jogging once a week will it be before I can jog for longer times. Lol i know maybe should post in a fitness forum or something but this is only forum I use so thought some of you guys out there might know if you jog.

Re: Jogging in Canada
Jogging in winter can be challenging due to outdoor conditions. Summer can be hard due to the heat in places like southern Ontario. Investing in a good quality treadmill is a great idea.

Re: Jogging in Canada
Depends on the weather I guess ;)
I've also started running this year and just thought this morning after my run 'would I be doing this right now at this time of year in canada?'. We were in TO last year and there were loads of joggers down by the lake at the Beaches during the summer. Unless you're heading to deepest darkest nowhere, there's bound to be a local running club where ever you go. I would imagine that BC would be a little less retsictive, where are you headed? Incidentally, I bought a canadian book on running called 'beginning runners handbook' which has an excellent 13 week programme for complete novices. After just 6 weeks, I've just come home from running 5.5 miles and that's from being reasonably unfit and from a standing start. Check out this website too, can help when your motivation dips.....www.runnersworld.co.uk |

Re: Jogging in Canada
Hi there, I run 3 or 4 times a week during my lunch break from work. I run mostly on the treadmill. Treadmill running, I find, is harder than running outside as it's hotter and boring, I plug myself into my ipod, I prefer it though because if I'm having a bad run at least I can get off and do something else, obviously outside you have to get home no matter what. What you are doing is correct, to start off with a run, then walk for a bit then run again. Slowly extend your running times and shorten your walk times and try to regulate your breathing, if you breath quickly and gasp then you are not taking the oxygen into your muscles, that's when cramp sets in.
Sorry if I'm burbling here, but stretch out before a run and always, always warm down, try to take a small bottle of water with you, you can buy small sports bottles for about £1 - £1.50. When we move over the pond I am planning on buying a treadmill so that I can carry on with the running. Good luck, keep at it, it does get easier. Ps: Make sure you have a proper pair of running trainers otherwise you'll knacker your ankles. Karen |
Re: Jogging in Canada
Thanks for advice Karen. Running once everyweek can I be able to run further and for longer. I only want to run once a week so hopefully my running will improve.

Re: Jogging in Canada
One thing about running in Calgary is that you have to get used to the altitude! When we got here (from sea-level in UK) we found we got short of breath just walking up the stairs! :p
ps: If you really want to get fitter you should try to run, or some ather cardio-vascular exercise {ie makes you mildly short of breath}, at least two or three times a week. |
Re: Jogging in Canada
I have noticed some runners here but many more power walkers out in all weathers :)

Re: Jogging in Canada
There's lots of people out jogging in Winnipeg today, even in the depths of winter you see some dedicated (or insane) people out jogging.
We even have a chain of stores here dedicated to the practise "The Running Room". |
Re: Jogging in Canada
I live in NS and there are joggers everywhere, particularly around the lake paths. They go all year, shorts in summer, winterized running suits, etc.

Re: Jogging in Canada
See if you can find a book by John Stanton - "Running start to finish" - it's great for motivation, and has some really good (and realistic!!!) training programs.
To improve your running, you will have to run/exercise more than once a week. 30 minutes three times a week would be good - if you get started now, while it's nice outside, it will become a habit, and easier to keep up when fall and winter is coming. (Says she who hasn't run in a year...maybe time to start back up...) |

also has the advantage of shortening/lenghtening the workout depending on your fitness level/time. try the below for a start (ps i'm ex forces and police trainer) 3 min warm up 3mph 1 min 5mph 1 min 5.5mph 2 min 4.5 1 min 5mph 1 min 5.5mph 1 min 4mph 1 min 5mph 1 min 4.5mph 3 min 3mph warm down. 15 min total. end do this for for 4 weeks once a week, then increase everything by 1mph, then try adding an incline 2% to start. |
