Default IT Jobs in Canada.

Hi all from rainy London England,

So here’s the story so far, I’m in the last few stages of moving to Canada!!! Does any know what the IT Job market is like in Canada? If so, please share your experiences no matter how small.

Thanks!

It also depends on what area of "IT" you work in.... can you give more specifics about your qualifications?

The first would definitely tie you to the bigger cities; the second less so. I do not envy you being a Lotus Notes/Domino support analyst; I use those products and wish I didn't have to. There's another fellow here who despises LN but that's another story.

My opinion, in watching the labour markets in the UK, Canada, and the US is that you will be paid less in Canada and will not have as many opportunities; the population is smaller and if one job goes away, the next one may be hundreds or thousands of miles away. I'd guess that the biggest users of LN would be in the financial industry which would tend to tie you to the Toronto area.

But you haven't said where you'll be moving.

Have a look at www.monster.ca and also www.workopolis.com that should give you a rough idea of jobs in various provinces.

Sorry to half jump on the back of this thread but I was interested as I am planning to move to Canada in a few years time, I have seen in the forums that some people rate degrees in Canada like the holy grail whilst others seem to think they aren't as important as experience. Anyhow I've got 4 years experience with ETL/Data warehousing, business objects etc but no degree, I realise the search will be a challenge and I'll probably also be more suited to the Toronto area(fine by me, not a huge fan of BC) but will I get shot down for not having a formal qualification(I was thinking about a few Microsoft/Cisco things to keep me occupied in the mean time) or will my experience carry me through? I was planning to go out on a temp. work permit get a job and apply for PR, if that makes any difference.

Cheers

Tom

Hi all - I keep mentioning the IT Software Pilot Project work permit route - and am beginning to sound like a cracked record - so I'll mention it again here one final time just in case it is useful information for anyone who wants to go work permit route first

My hubbie got his original job based on this scheme. If the employer wants to take you on on a temporary basis AND the job meets the criteria listed AND you meet the criteria listed, the job does not have to be approved by HRDC before a work permit is issued. So the process is simplified somewhat.

Employers like simple processes so it is worth telling them about this scheme if you think the job qualifies. Link to hrdc is here: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/epb/lmd/fw/itexemp.shtml

The onwards links to CIC are broken since they changed the site but I'll post them if I can find them

Ok - found it - this is a better link as it has the job descriptions and qualifications etc: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/special-tech.asp

Hi, I'm landing in about 3 weeks and have been for a few interviews. I do L2 desktop (RRT) and server support (NT + Solaris), also VPN, Blackberry BES LN/Domino and the usual enterprise offerings - I'm in a bit of an all round job really at the moment. I had a couple of interviews with agencies last month and one with a telecoms company, all in Ottawa. I put my CV (sorry, resume) on Monster.ca on a Friday and had three calls by Monday for interviews. They all seemed very interested but a little let down as I wouldn't be available for two months. This was 6 weeks ago, i'm going back in three weeks for good so i'll be emailing all the people that contacted me again soon. Hope this helps. Chris

Hi Tom - you'll need the job before you can get the work permit as they are tied together - no "open" work permits exist as far as I'm aware. The info above (in my last post) about the IT exemptions may be useful to you therefore. Good luck.

PS Hubbie got a job based on just work experience and various City and Guilds evening courses - not a degree - basically if you interview well and have the right experience, I don't think the formal qualification thingie should be a stumbling block. Especially if you approach the companies direct rather than waiting for them to advertise a position.

Cheers for the reply ladymoose,

Yeah I'm talking rubbish, I was on about the under 30 traveling work permit jobbies to get me started(even if its only bar work to keep me in the money whilst I search for a year).

Yeah I found that IT exemptions thing on the CIC website this afternoon it looks promising. I plan to get a Microsoft qualification or 2 before I travel so I at least have a few qualifications, I was just interested cause in england a degree seems to be the last thing on their mind whereas I've seen a few posts to the contrary, although a similar amount saying that they're not needed.

Thanks a lot

Tom
