IT Jobs
 

Hello all,

Just wondering, where online is the best place to find jobs in the IT sector in the Ontario area? I know of Workopolis, but are there any others? Accordinging to Workopolis there isn't a plentiful supply of IT jobs related to my partners field!

My partner works in unix 3rd line support, so if anyone has any recommendations then please let me know! Thank you.

You can sign up for Peter's New Jobs. It saves a lot of looking around but you'll still need to do other searching in addition.
There are not many IT jobs of any sort at the moment. I'm looking myself for something right now and contracting seems the best option at the moment, until the market hopefully picks up later in the year.
Also sign up with a few agencies in your town. Let them do some of the donkey work for you when searching. Also give your resume a makeover.

Remember in the modern world as a general rule you don't find jobs, jobs and headhunters find you. Especially in IT.

Get your resume up to scratch with all the appropriate keywords and put it on Monster and Workopolis, then let them find you. By all means look as well, but generally IT job searches are sub-contracted out and there are plenty of people looking for the right people for the roles.

I agree. Companies are the ones that are looking for IT experts and not the other way around but of course you still have to be visible by posting your impressive resume, educational background, employment history, etc on huge job sites.
However, you should know that not all jobs and not all talented applicants are found on only one job site like Workopolis. So you might as well go and sign up on some other reliable sites because one of those sites might be the one to give you your big break. If you're open to working online, I think there's a huge chance for you to land a job since most companies now are into outsourcing. Staff.com for example helps you find a full time and stable job. I agree with the above. Get your partner to sort his resume out and then upload it to Workpolis and Monster. The recruiters will then come to you (they certainly have for my last two jobs anyway). In my experience most IT jobs are not advertised so don't be too disheartened if you dont see many positions advertised.

They should allow you to enter job search criteria, plus email you jobs that match, and of course potential employers can see you.

Also work registering on LinkedIn, I've had a couple of recruiters contact me from there.

It is also worth pointing out that Canada can be very much a "It's who you know, and who knows you" affair when job hunting.

My husband got his job it IT by looking for companies that matched what his one in the UK did and emailing them his resume.

Couple of interviews on Skype and then interviews in person when we were over there for a holiday and he got offered the job. :)

RIM - I would be VERY wary of taking a job there at the moment. A few people I know have been contacted by recruiters, as have I, and we'd all said pretty much the same thing; we'd need 1.5 to 2 times our current salary, or a signing bonus equating to that. Might sound rude, but the job market isn't great, and jumping to a company that isn't what it used to be, and more layoffs could be on the horizon doesn't fill people with joy and happiness, and you'd want to make sure you had some kind of security if you were laid off.

Yes, I feel so bad for RIM, they are still actively recruiting though. I got called for an interview very quickly.

They are apparently desperate for Mac / iOS developers and QA staff. I think they basically want to provide the same level of control on iOS that they have on Blackberry. Makes sense, and Apple hasn't been overly interested in this kind of thing, though Lion Server does have a nice provisioning system for iOS devices.

definitley chase companies up after applying. some are a bit slow in getting back to you though. I applied for a role at a very big bank downtown and they came back to me asking for an interview for the role 5 months after had submitted my CV :D

interesting thread, my OH also works in IT and one of his clients is RIM (he does Qt stuff atm). I've told him to upload to workopolis & monster; fingers crossed.
I help him out as office manager now but used to be head of Modern Languages (French & German) in a Scottish secondary. Think my chances of getting French teaching job in a bilingual country will be slim however !

Try offering yourself to the French language school boards as a teacher of English and German.

Whereabouts in Canada do you reside? And you do have your Canadian citizenship yet? If so, you can work in the US via the NAFTA (T1N visa). Many Canadians do this. Work during the week in the US, then head home on the weekends.

I used to live in Vancouver and had a heck of a time finding work there. A company in the US across the border found my resume and contacted me. So I did the weekly commute thing and I got paid a lot more than what I would have got in Canada. About CDN$60k in Vancouver (if I could find work) and US$120k in Seattle. One day out of the blue, I got offered a job for a firm in California for US$180k doing what I do (Visual Studio) and I jumped at the chance. But that was just my situation (single, no kids etc).

But if you live close to the US border, there's always that option. The IT sector in the US is doing well and hasn't really suffered because of the economic slump.
