Job Situation and other things?
 

Me and my husband now have our hearts set on Alberta or British Columbia, we have 3 kids and what we would like to know is what would be his chances of a job.
He is a sheetmetalworker/welder with all certificates and he has been applying for jobs through the internet but he has had no luck, in fact he is lucky to get a reply most of the time, are we kidding ourselves that it will be a better life or is it likely he will get a job pretty quickly.
Also what is it like for taxes etc. as we have been told we will be worse off than we are herein britain I cant seriously believe that but any advice would be appreciated.
I think we may fly there next year to try the place out.
Please, any feedback either positive or negative will be taken seriously.

I'm a sheetmetal worker/ welder too,
there is plenty of work in AB but not BC
that said we found most companies don't want to know until you are a landed immigrant.

Federal immigration, you virtually need a degree, speak french and have a job.

we are moving early next year under Provincial nomination
this is when a province has a skills shortage and you and i come in

when i started down this road in april 2003 the only provinces that listed a shortage for me were manitoba , saskatchewan, new brunswick
we narrowed it down to Sask for the weather etc.
its near Alberta so ok for rocky mountain holidays still!

Look under skilled worker, provincial nomination on the cic website

most of the jobs were near the big cities
tax , is about the same except vat is 13% , you earn more and have a better standard of living
houses are much cheaper ,
kids stay at school to 18

Try canada's version of the job centre.
HRDC, which stands for human resources development commission would be a good start for you to see what kind of jobs are available.

One thing to think about is the kind of sheetmetal worker hubby is since in canada there are 2 main types.
A sheetmetal mechanic generally works in a workshop forming the sheetmetal using presses, while a sheetmetal worker usually works on construction sites installing siding on buildings.
So in your job search, make sure you are looking for the correct type of work.

There is a site somewhere on the Net - to do with HRDC that gives the companies hiring for various jobs in various provinces. Someone posted it on here but I can't find it now.

It was something to do with the names of companies willing to hire immigrant workers.

Perhaps someone else will remember where it was - I looked through the posts but there are so many of them = couldn't find it!

C'etait moi! The link was http://lmi-imt.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/ then click on the 'who hires' link. This lists occupations per province. Also if you click on the 'other LMI' link it takes you to local market reports for labour, economy and other such information for each province. Plus clicking on 'wages and salaries' will give an idea of possible earnings.

(Also I sent a link to a similar thing for the Sasketchwan area so I'll post it below once I've found it! ) :)

OK I think the link you mentioned of people hiring immigrant workers was from here http://www.immigrationsask.gov.sk.ca...htm#Designated This is only for Saskatchwan - to get the list scroll down the list of skilled workers and click on the welder job title and this brings up a company which hires immigrant workers. Also just below the skilled worker list they have a manufacturer's link where you can type a key word and they list possible employers in that field - again for Sasketchwan only though.

Another link which may be handy for the prospective sheet metal worker in Canada is this one http://www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/groups/7261.shtml which lists if any trade certificates are needed in each province, as the rules change depending on where ya goin' ;)
