Incorrect.

Alberta latest unemployment rate is 5.4% which is a hell of a lot better than 9% which in unemployment terms is huge, sort of makes my argument for me don't it.

I said up thread you have a job to go to, good for you. There are obviously many there who don't have jobs and can't get one so they move west.

I've met a lot of Maritimers up here in the oil patch and there seems to be a big cultural attitude where they work all the hours they can in the summer and then are content to take most of the winter off, get the 'pogey' (dole) and drink beer/smoke dope all winter.

Is that a very untrue impression to get of the Maritimes or is there some truth in it?

Who gives a s--t about being close to the UK, stuff that. Or Europe for that matter. As a Canadian friend who moved around a lot said to me once, if you're going to move, MOVE. Half measures are pointless, might as well stay where you are. (Not that I'm saying everyone moves to the maritimes to be close to the UK, I'm sure some people just like it.)

I had all this guff from family about how I should buy a house with x bedrooms and x features for when they come to visit, I knew they never would so I didn't bother. On the rare occasions they do it turns out they prefer to stay in hotels.

I have no idea why they would want to:p

Whilst at a meeting the other week I met 5 people from Alberta. They told me that people where now leaving there to come and work in MB. They said how times had changed because people used to leave here and head off to AB for work.

Can't speak for the Maritimes (Newfoundland not being a Maritime province, but rather, an Atlantic one....;)) but that's a very fair assessment of the transient Nfld workforce IMHO. It has it's roots very much in the seasonal nature of the fishery where working enough time on a boat or in a plant to 'get your stamps' is the norm.

I was under the impression that St John's was the place to move to because of the off-shore oil drilling.

That's absolutely true of Newfie construction workers in Toronto. They live in a heap in a trailer or on the floors of the apartments of displaced Newfies. Quasi-Australians, they are.

I'm not knocking the oil patch (I'm employed and not starving, though I'm hardly living like a king) but the winters are eight months long and the coldest part is not ONLY -25.

Minus "25"?
bwahahahaha.

Try -45. For your next trip, try waiting for the bus (that doesn't come) when outside in -45. Try doing that for a month straight. Then decide if coming to the land where the streets are paved with gold is worth it.

I would hazard a guess that you have never had to do that. If you have, please let us know where you were and when;)

You know something I can't stand? People who deny things that you say you have done. What I can say for sure is that YOU haven`t because if you really live in Alberta then you know exactly how cold it gets, especially if you have to take the bus.

Here's an example of exactly how cold it gets in the oil patch: A touch worse than -45.
http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/edmo.../12141366.html

Even in Calgary it gets to the low -30s with windchill. Last november it was -39C with windchill in Calgary.

http://www.globaltvcalgary.com/Calga...774/story.html

And yes I have been outside waiting on the bus during it so if you`re saying it`s -33C without windchill that in no way invalidates how cold it actually is WITH windchill if you`re standing outside in it rather than in the comfort of a heated vehicle.

I think what he was getting at, was it is not/was not -45°C for an entire month anywhere in Canada.;)

And yes he does live in Alberta.
